Epic launches rewards program to entice users

Now that Apple is set to stop charging fees for purchases outside the App Store, Epic is offering a new incentive. Starting today, you’ll get 20 percent back in Epic Rewards when you use the company’s payment system for in-app purchases in Fortnite, Rocket League, and Fall Guys.

The offer isn’t limited to the App Store, so you’ll get the same 20% rewards on PC, Android, and the web. The reward balance will be credited 14 days after purchase. You can redeem Epic Rewards in the company’s games or on the Epic Games Store.

PC gamers using Epic’s Store also receive 20 percent off all purchases. However, unlike the in-app purchase program, this promotion is only valid for a limited time. It ends on August 31.

The rewards were paid after a court ruling in Epic’s favor. Last week, Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers, a federal district judge in Northern California, said Apple had violated a previous ruling from 2021. This four-year injunction required the iPhone manufacturer to allow App Store developers to redirect users to alternative payment systems, bypassing Apple’s 30 percent commission.

However, after the 2021 ruling, Apple charges a 27 percent fee for external payments. (For members of the iOS Small Business Program, it was 12 percent lower.) The company also demonstrated “fear screens,” discouraging users from using third-party payment systems due to reduced privacy and security. In her ruling, the judge criticized Apple, saying that the company knew what it was doing and “chose the most anticompetitive option at every step.”

Following the ruling, Epic quickly announced that Fortnite would return to the App Store. On Friday, Epic announced that it had submitted the game for consideration on the Apple storefront.
