The People’s Bank of China (PBOC) has announced a comprehensive upgrade to the digital yuan’s infrastructure and service system. This significant development includes the launch of the central bank’s digital yuan system (DCEPS) and the digital yuan smart contract ecosystem service framework (e-CNY SMART Contract).

Key Advancements in Digital Yuan Infrastructure

At the 2026 Financial Street Forum Annual Conference, Pan Gongsheng, the Governor of the People’s Bank of China, revealed that the central bank had successfully transitioned the digital yuan to a new accounting framework earlier this year. This shift redefines the digital yuan’s position from a form of cash to a deposit currency.

Pan Gongsheng also confirmed that the digital yuan operations management center, established in Beijing last year, is now fully operational. This center serves as a comprehensive business platform for digital yuan, integrating services for issuance management, retail and wholesale transactions, blockchain technology, and smart contracts.

The number of digital yuan business operation institutions has expanded significantly, growing from 10 to 30. This expansion now encompasses all systemically important banks, ensuring broader participation and accessibility.

International Operations and New Platforms

Furthermore, the digital yuan international operations center, launched in Shanghai in September of the previous year, is actively contributing to global digital currency initiatives. This center has introduced three core business platforms:

  • Digital Yuan Cross-border Digital Payment Platform: This platform aims to address existing pain points in traditional cross-border payments by leveraging the capabilities of sovereign digital currency.
  • Digital Yuan Blockchain Service Platform: Designed to provide standardized cross-chain transaction information transfer and on-chain digital yuan payment services for various scenarios and industry-specific blockchains.
  • Digital Asset Platform: This platform offers standard, ready-to-use financial-grade digital asset services, enabling existing financial infrastructure to extend its operations onto the blockchain.

These advancements signify a major step forward in the development and adoption of China’s central bank digital currency (CBDC), the digital yuan. The enhanced infrastructure and new service frameworks are expected to foster greater innovation, efficiency, and integration within both domestic and international financial ecosystems.

The strategic upgrades are poised to enhance the capabilities of the digital yuan, making it a more versatile and robust tool for a wide range of financial applications. The expansion of operational institutions and the focus on international integration highlight China’s commitment to leading in the global digital currency landscape.

The introduction of smart contract capabilities and blockchain services further positions the digital yuan as a foundational technology for future financial innovations, potentially streamlining complex transactions and enabling new business models.
