NASA has unveiled a breathtaking photograph capturing a spectacular astronomical panorama unfolding above the Atacama Desert in Chile. The image, taken in July 2025, features the “Desert Stairway to Heaven” sculpture, acting as a symbolic bridge between the terrestrial world and the boundless cosmos. It showcases the grandeur of the Milky Way, zodiacal light, and other celestial phenomena.
Milky Way Embraces the Atacama
Against the backdrop of the Atacama Desert’s stark, dry beauty, renowned for its exceptionally clear skies, a true cosmic symphony is on display. Dominating the photograph is the vibrant band of our Milky Way, ascending almost vertically into the heavens. Its dark center, a region rich in dust and gas, creates a dramatic contrast with the radiance of billions of stars that form the core of our galaxy.
Cosmic Wonders in a Terrestrial Setting
The photograph masterfully documents not only galactic scale but also finer details that add depth and explain astronomical occurrences. To the left, within the band of zodiacal light, the bright star Spica is visible. A subtle greenish and reddish glow of airglow shimmers faintly above the horizon, lending the image a special charm. At the very top right is the Small Magellanic Cloud, a satellite galaxy of the Milky Way. In the foreground, besides the sculpture, the outlines of the Andes mountains, the Licancabur volcano, and the lights of the town of San Pedro de Atacama can be discerned, emphasizing the connection between the cosmic and the earthly.
