American energy company Constellation has announced a 20-year agreement to supply electricity from its Calvert Cliffs nuclear power plant in Maryland to Amazon’s massive data centers. This deal highlights the growing reliance of major tech companies on stable, clean energy sources for their energy-intensive operations.

Major Deal with Amazon

Under the terms of the agreement, Constellation will provide Amazon with 690 MW of capacity. This includes 190 MW of new capacity set to come online between 2030 and 2032. This significant collaboration involves substantial investments exceeding $3 billion in Maryland’s infrastructure, earmarked for the modernization and upgrades of the entire Calvert Cliffs nuclear facility.

In addition to the power supply agreement, the parties have also finalized a retail supply contract, which will support Amazon’s operational activities within PJM, the largest electricity market in the United States, encompassing 13 states.

Alphabet Deal Nears Completion

Concurrently with the Amazon agreement, it has been revealed that Google’s parent company, Alphabet, is in the final stages of reaching an arrangement with Constellation for a multi-year nuclear power supply deal. This agreement is expected to be worth at least $1 billion. According to Bloomberg reports, details of this deal could be disclosed as early as this week.

These agreements underscore the increasing role of nuclear energy in providing stable and clean power to major technology companies that require substantial electricity volumes for their data centers and cloud services.

Strategic Direction for Tech Giants

Amazon and Alphabet are clearly demonstrating a strategic focus on utilizing clean energy sources to power their infrastructure. Amazon, in particular, is exploring the potential construction of small modular nuclear reactors for its own needs, with plans to have them operational in the 2030s. This signals the company’s long-term vision for energy independence and environmental responsibility.

Constellation, as the largest operator of nuclear power plants in the U.S., plays a pivotal role in realizing these strategic objectives. The company continues to invest in modernizing its facilities and developing new solutions to meet the growing demands of the energy market, particularly in the renewable and low-carbon energy sector.

Significance for the Energy Sector

Long-term contracts with giants like Amazon and Alphabet provide Constellation with the stability and confidence needed for further investment in the development of nuclear energy. This also positively impacts the entire industry, stimulating innovation and contributing to the transition toward cleaner energy. Agreements of this magnitude could set a precedent for other companies aiming to reduce their carbon footprint and ensure reliable energy supply.
