Anthropic has introduced a significant change in its Claude Code development environment, specifically version 2.1.311, enabling AI agents to perform actions like file deletion without requiring explicit user permission for each operation. This update has ignited discussions surrounding AI safety and control.

New Capabilities and Risks

The newly implemented environment is named CLAUDE_CODE_EVEN_MORE_DANGEROUSLY_SKIP_PERMISSIONS. According to Daisy Holman, an engineer at Anthropic, this new option expands upon a previous feature that allowed skipping certain security checks. However, the earlier version still blocked obviously dangerous commands, such as recursively deleting a user’s home directory.

“Interestingly, –dangerously-skip-permissions didn’t actually allow all operations. We were still blocking some obvious commands like `rm -rf ~` (file deletion).

But today’s version allows you to turn off this feature by setting the new environment variable CLAUDE_CODE_EVEN_MORE_DANGEROUSLY_SKIP_PERMISSIONS=1 (if you truly need it),” Holman explained.

Despite the explicit and cautionary naming of the new environment, and the fact that it wasn’t included in the official changelog for this version, Holman confirmed that this is not a joke. She emphasized that the function is intended for scenarios where a user is fully aware of the potential risks and requires greater autonomy for their AI agent.

Control Remains in User’s Hands

It is crucial to note that the introduction of this new functionality does not mean the removal of all default security measures in Claude Code. The feature requires active configuration by the user. This means the AI will not start deleting files without your knowledge unless you explicitly enable this setting. Furthermore, organizational administrators can still implement their own restrictions and security policies, which may override or block the operation of this new environment.

This change could prove beneficial for developers working on complex automation tasks where repeated permission confirmations can slow down processes. However, it also places a greater onus on users to properly manage AI tools and understand the implications of their actions.

Anthropic representatives assure that safety remains a priority, and such ‘dangerous’ settings will always require explicit user confirmation to prevent accidental or malicious operations.
