China’s railway network has achieved a historic milestone, transporting a staggering 3.71 billion passengers during the first three quarters of this year. This figure represents a robust 4.8% increase compared to the same period last year, marking a new record for passenger volume during this timeframe.

Surge in Passenger Traffic and Tourism

The impressive growth highlights the increasing reliance on rail travel within China. On average, the nation’s railways operated 11,511 passenger trains daily during the first three quarters, a 5.3% rise year-on-year. This indicates a significant expansion in service capacity to meet the burgeoning demand.

A particularly notable trend is the surge in dedicated tourism trains. The railway system operated a total of 2,860 tourism trains, a substantial 25.5% increase compared to the previous year. This category is further broken down into 1,613 specialized tour trains and 1,247 dedicated tourist lines, showcasing a focused effort to boost domestic and potentially international tourism via rail.

International Reach and Future Reforms

The railway network also saw a significant uptick in international travelers, with 19.002 million foreign passengers recorded, a remarkable 33.4% increase year-on-year. This suggests a growing appeal of China’s rail services to global visitors.

In line with optimizing its vast network, China State Railway Group (国铁集团) has announced a comprehensive reform of its train numbering system. This initiative, set to be implemented in two phases starting late November and late December, will involve a complete overhaul of the alphanumeric coding for all train services.

Phase One: Broad Impact

The first phase, scheduled for late November, will focus on reassigning numbers for a wide range of train types. This includes conventional passenger trains, tourist trains, and freight trains. The goal is to streamline the identification and management of these services.

Phase Two: High-Speed and Urban Networks

The second phase, planned for late December, will address the numbering system for high-speed passenger trains, intercity passenger trains, and suburban/regional passenger trains. Additionally, it will cover the numbering for express services utilizing high-speed trains. This phased approach aims to minimize disruption while ensuring a thorough update across the entire network.

These reforms to the train numbering system are expected to enhance operational efficiency and improve passenger experience by providing a more logical and standardized way to identify train services across the country.
