During the 11th World Mazu Cultural Forum, China’s “Mazu” intelligent integrated machine, a smart meteorological early warning solution, was officially delivered to Sri Lanka. This significant step aims to bolster Sri Lanka’s capabilities in meteorological disaster prevention and mitigation, addressing its vulnerabilities to frequent extreme weather events.

Addressing Meteorological Challenges in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka faces increasing challenges due to climate change, experiencing a rise in sudden, intense weather phenomena like short-term heavy convection and torrential rain. Compounding these issues are existing limitations in network stability and computing resources in certain areas. The “Mazu” solution, tailored for Sri Lanka, comprises a cloud-based early warning system and an intelligent integrated machine. This comprehensive system covers the entire chain of meteorological monitoring, forecasting, early warning, and service delivery.

Tailored Solution for Diverse Weather Threats

The “Mazu” system is designed to provide tiered early warnings for various hazardous weather conditions, including heavy rain, high temperatures, strong winds, and cyclones. Its applications extend to critical sectors such as marine, agriculture, and aviation, offering crucial data and support for decision-making.

Project Timeline and Global Reach

The project commenced at the end of 2025, driven by the joint efforts of the China Meteorological Administration and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). The development has been carefully aligned with Sri Lanka’s specific needs, with a particular focus on enhancing aviation meteorological applications. Currently, the supporting integrated machine hardware is in place, and the customized system development is progressing as planned. The system is anticipated to be operational by the end of 2026.

Enhancing Disaster Resilience

Following the delivery of the integrated machine, Chinese meteorological departments will continue to collaborate with Sri Lankan counterparts to optimize technical integration. The goal is to significantly enhance Sri Lanka’s capacity for meteorological disaster prevention and reduction, ensuring that early warning services reach frontline disaster management efforts. This collaboration is key to building regional climate resilience and ensuring safety across maritime and land territories.

“Mazu” Solution’s Global Footprint

The “Mazu” solution has demonstrated considerable success beyond Sri Lanka. As of October 2026, it has been implemented in eight countries, including Pakistan and Ethiopia, and is undergoing cloud-based trials in over 50 nations. This widespread adoption underscores its role as a globally recognized public service product for disaster risk reduction.
