China’s large cruise ship construction sector has officially entered a new phase of mass production with the recent delivery of the “Adora Gala”. This milestone follows the successful launch of the country’s first domestically built large cruise ship, “Adora Magic City”, and signifies a significant leap in shipbuilding capabilities, moving from initial development to refined and optimized production.

From “Zero to One” to “One to Excellence”

While the “Adora Magic City” represented the crucial breakthrough of building a large cruise ship from scratch, the “Adora Gala” demonstrates China’s growing expertise and ability to enhance and perfect the design and construction process. The second domestically built vessel is not merely a replica of its predecessor; it boasts a larger volume, incorporates more advanced technology, and features a considerably improved construction efficiency.

Chen Gang, Chairman of CSSC Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding and the on-site commander and chief designer for the large domestic cruise ship project, elaborated on the advancements. He highlighted the establishment of a comprehensive R&D system for cruise ships, including the successful implementation and validation of key technologies. On the manufacturing side, a robust production design system and standards have been put in place. Furthermore, a dual-cycle supply chain system, integrating both domestic and international resources, has been cultivated.

Adhering to the principle of “building one, designing one, and researching one,” Chen Gang announced that the conceptual design phase for the third domestically built large cruise ship has already commenced. This forward-looking approach underscores China’s commitment to continuous innovation and leadership in the global cruise shipbuilding industry.

“Adora Gala” Specifications and Enhancements

The “Adora Gala” is an impressive vessel, measuring 341 meters in length with a beam of 37.2 meters. It has a gross tonnage of 141,900 tons and features 16 decks dedicated to guest activities, offering 2,130 guest cabins with a maximum capacity of 5,232 passengers.

Compared to the “Adora Magic City,” the “Adora Gala” is longer by 17.4 meters and has a larger gross tonnage by 0.64 million tons. Significant expansions have been made to its public areas and outdoor leisure spaces, which have increased by 735 square meters and 1,913 square meters respectively, reaching a total of 25,599 square meters and 14,272 square meters.

Technological and Experiential Upgrades

Technologically, the “Adora Gala” is equipped with two additional desulfurization towers and Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) systems. These systems are crucial for controlling ship emissions, reflecting a growing emphasis on environmental sustainability in maritime operations.

Passenger experience has also been a key focus. The ship’s cabins have undergone extensive noise and vibration reduction treatments, with internal noise levels maintained below 45 decibels even at maximum cruising speeds, according to official data. For entertainment and dining, the vessel features 28 restaurants and bars, a theater with a capacity of 800 people, and a unique 200-meter-long circular sea-level running track.

Catering to the South China market, the “Adora Gala” will offer localized services, including Cantonese language support, Cantonese cuisine, and traditional Guangfu morning tea, enhancing the onboard experience for regional passengers.

The delivery of “Adora Gala” marks a significant stride for China’s shipbuilding industry, solidifying its position in the complex and high-value market of large cruise ship construction and setting the stage for future advancements.
