China’s new energy vehicle (NEV) market is showing strong signs of recovery, with preliminary estimates for October indicating wholesale sales of 1.8 million units. This represents a significant year-on-year increase of 12% and a month-on-month rise of 8%, signaling a robust rebound after a period of adjustment. The NEV sector is increasingly proving to be the core engine driving the stable development of the broader passenger car market, with its growth significantly outpacing the overall automotive industry.

Key Players Drive Historic Sales

The surge in October sales is attributed to the accelerated electrification efforts by leading automakers and a supportive consumer environment. Several major manufacturers reported record-breaking wholesale sales for the month, underscoring the success of domestic brands in their transition to electric mobility.

The top five manufacturers in terms of NEV wholesale sales for October were BYD Auto, Geely Auto, Chery Auto, Changan Auto, and Leapmotor. All five companies achieved strong year-on-year and month-on-month sales growth, contributing significantly to the sustained upward trend in the NEV market.

Furthermore, joint venture brands like SAIC-Volkswagen and FAW-Volkswagen saw their NEV sales more than double year-on-year. Geely Auto, Chery Auto, SAIC Passenger Vehicle, XPeng, and Great Wall Motor all set their own historical sales records in October.

Industry-Wide Electrification Trend

The impressive performance across a diverse range of brands—including domestic, joint venture, and new EV startups—demonstrates that electrification is no longer a niche trend but a widely accepted industry consensus. This shift is characterized by accelerated technological advancements and a faster pace of new product launches, leading to continuous market performance improvements.

Sales Projections Methodology

The China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) bases its October estimate on a detailed analysis of sales data. In September 2026, manufacturers with wholesale sales exceeding 10,000 units accounted for 93% of the total NEV sales for that month. Based on preliminary data, the combined sales of these high-volume manufacturers in October reached 1.62 million units.

By applying the sales structure from September to the available October data, the CPCA projects the total wholesale sales for new energy passenger vehicles nationwide in October to be approximately 1.8 million units. This methodology accounts for the vast majority of the market, ensuring a reliable forecast.

The strong performance in October is a positive indicator for the future of the NEV market in China, highlighting the industry’s resilience and the growing consumer appetite for electric vehicles.
