The Chinese auto import market experienced a dramatic downturn in September 2026, with import volumes dropping by an astonishing 49% year-on-year, according to Cui Dongshu, Secretary-General of the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA). The total number of imported vehicles for the month stood at 21,000 units, marking a significant 6% decrease compared to August.

This sharp decline follows a challenging period for the sector. From January to September 2026, the cumulative import volume reached 290,000 units, representing a 20% decrease compared to the same period last year. This trend indicates persistent headwinds affecting the demand for imported vehicles in China.

Shifting Import Composition

Analysis of the import structure reveals that passenger vehicles continue to dominate, accounting for over 99% of all imported vehicles. When pickup trucks are included, this proportion becomes even more pronounced.

The performance of imported new energy vehicles (NEVs) presents a mixed picture. While imported hybrid vehicles saw a healthy 15% increase in volume during the first nine months of 2026, plug-in hybrid vehicles experienced a significant slump of 54%. Pure electric vehicle imports also declined by 27%, signaling a weaker performance for imported NEVs overall compared to traditional powertrains.

Regarding engine specifications for imported passenger cars, the focus remains on gasoline models with engine displacements below 2 liters. Last year, vehicles with larger displacements between 3 and 4 liters showed better resilience, but this year, models in the 1.5-2 liter range have demonstrated relatively stronger performance amidst the downturn.

Key Importing Countries and Regional Performance

In September 2026, the leading countries for vehicle imports into China were:

  • Japan: 7,399 units
  • Germany: 7,255 units
  • United Kingdom: 2,488 units
  • Slovakia: 1,418 units
  • Mexico: 818 units
  • United States: 791 units
  • Austria: 355 units
  • Belgium: 112 units
  • South Korea: 95 units
  • Italy: 90 units

The retail sales of imported vehicles from January to September 2026 also reflect the market’s weakness, with a 32% decrease, totaling 280,000 units. September alone saw retail sales of 29,000 units, a 39% drop, indicating that pressure on the market is likely to continue.

Luxury Segment and Regional Demand

The overall demand for both domestically produced and imported luxury vehicles appears to be sluggish. Traditional affluent regions, including Beijing, Shanghai, Hangzhou, Chengdu, and Shenzhen, are facing considerable pressure in their luxury car markets. In contrast, some northern and central-western regions, particularly Xinjiang and Shandong, which are also significant oil-producing areas, have shown stronger market performance.

The data highlights a challenging environment for China’s imported vehicle market, influenced by shifting consumer preferences, economic conditions, and a more competitive domestic automotive industry.
