Chery Chairman Yin Tongyue declared at the 2026 Chery Global Innovation Conference that the company is an “AI technology company disguised as a car manufacturer.” He emphasized that AI is not only redefining production methods but also the boundaries and business models of enterprises.

AI’s Transformative Power in the Automotive Industry

Yin highlighted that while AI may lead to job displacement and the decline of certain industries, it will also unlock numerous new opportunities. Chery firmly believes in AI’s potential to replace skills and even offer insights and strategic foresight into the future. However, he clarified that AI can enhance efficiency but cannot substitute human judgment, responsibility, or empathy.

The real threat in the future, according to Yin, lies with individuals, industries, and companies that refuse to embrace AI and restructure themselves accordingly. “The theme of today’s Chery Innovation Conference is ‘Change.’ How AI can bring about positive change for humanity, rather than uncontrolled consequences, is crucial for our continued participation and the future of our industry. Today, we are akin to the stablekeepers and carriage workshop owners facing the first Mercedes-Benz automobile,” he stated.

Chery’s Commitment to AI-Driven Transformation

Chery’s path is clear: to proactively undergo a “genetic recombination” using AI, beginning with internal transformation before aiming to change the world. Over the past five years, Chery has invested over 110 billion yuan in research and development, focusing on electrification and intelligent technologies. This significant investment underscores their commitment to staying at the forefront of automotive innovation.

Strong Sales Performance and Global Reach

The company’s recent performance illustrates its growing influence. In the first three quarters, Chery sold 2.207 million vehicles, securing the ninth position globally in sales volume. Its new energy vehicle (NEV) sales reached 859,000 units, placing it among the top five globally in this segment. Furthermore, Chery exported 1.551 million vehicles, maintaining its position as China’s top automotive exporter. Of these exports, 529,000 were NEVs, accounting for approximately one-seventh of China’s total NEV exports.

The Future of Mobility: Energy and Monetization

Looking ahead, Chery aims to transform every vehicle into a mobile, distributed, and truly green energy carrier. Future Chery vehicles will not only be free from fossil fuels but will also enable users to participate in energy trading, effectively allowing their cars to generate income for them. This vision positions Chery at the intersection of automotive technology, energy management, and financial innovation.

Chery’s strategic pivot towards AI and its commitment to internal transformation signal a bold vision for the future of mobility. By embracing AI, the company aims to not only redefine itself but also to lead the automotive industry into a new era of intelligent, sustainable, and interconnected transportation.
