The 140th session of the China Import and Export Fair, also known as the Canton Fair, is set to open its doors in Guangzhou on October 15th and run until November 4th. This significant event marks a major milestone, celebrating 70 years since the fair’s inception. Over these seven decades, the Canton Fair has evolved dramatically, expanding from an initial 9,600 square meters and 1,200 buyers to its current colossal size of 1.55 million square meters hosting 310,000 buyers. It has consistently operated for 140 sessions without interruption, solidifying its reputation as China’s largest, longest-running, most comprehensive international trade event and earning the moniker “China’s No. 1 Exhibition.”
Technological Innovation Takes Center Stage
This year’s fair is poised to highlight the growing strength of China’s high-tech manufacturing sector. From January to August, electromechanical products accounted for 55% of China’s total imports and exports, a notable increase from the previous year. Components like electronic components, industrial robots, 3D printers, and new energy vehicles are emerging as key drivers of foreign trade growth.
Reflecting these trends, the 140th Canton Fair will feature over 1.1 million ‘specialized, refined, unique, and new’ enterprises and ‘single champion’ companies among its 32,000 exhibitors. A significant 64% of participating companies are integrating new technologies such as industrial internet and artificial intelligence into their operations. Furthermore, the proportion of new products and green products on display has reached historic highs of 23.2% and 26%, respectively.
Digital Transformation Enhances Visitor Experience
The fair is doubling down on its digital and intelligent capabilities, with AI and big data deeply integrated into its operations. For the first time, the event will introduce 22 smart application scenarios and 16 AI-featured applications. In a pioneering move for the domestic exhibition industry, the fair will offer full-coverage, booth-level navigation and AR information displays, significantly enhancing the experience for all attendees.
Consumer Electronics Lead the Charge
The evolution of the Canton Fair’s product landscape is remarkable. Since 1999, when electromechanical products first became the largest product category, the fair has seen a significant shift. Today, consumer electronics are the dominant force, with a strong presence of cutting-edge products in areas like new energy storage, embodied intelligence, and smart healthcare. The distribution of product categories at the fair reflects this shift: consumer goods make up 56.6%, intermediate goods 30.7%, and capital goods 17.3%.
The Canton Fair is no longer just a platform for signing deals. It serves as a crucial hub where the latest global customer demands, consumer preferences, industry trends, product standards, and application scenarios converge, offering invaluable insights for exhibitors and buyers alike. This edition promises to showcase a plethora of advanced products manufactured in China, many making their global debut.
The fair will be held in three phases:
- Phase 1: October 15 – October 19
- Phase 2: October 23 – October 27
- Phase 3: October 31 – November 4
This 70th-anniversary edition of the Canton Fair is set to be a landmark event, underscoring China’s manufacturing prowess and its commitment to technological innovation and international trade.
