Canon is set to revolutionize 3D model creation with its upcoming Dual Pixel 3D Converter application, scheduled for release on October 8, 2026. This Windows-based software promises to transform standard camera photos into high-quality 3D models, eliminating the need for specialized equipment or extensive post-production work.

Effortless 3D Model Generation

The Dual Pixel 3D Converter will leverage Canon’s advanced Dual Pixel CMOS AF technology. This innovative autofocus system, which uses every pixel on the sensor for both imaging and phase-difference detection, allows each pixel to capture phase information. By analyzing this data, the software can algorithmically deduce the three-dimensional shape of a subject from a single image.

Users will be able to utilize compatible EOS R system cameras and lenses to capture Dual Pixel RAW (DPRAW) images. Additionally, the upcoming EOS R8 Mark II, slated for a 2026 October launch, will be able to generate 3D models from JPEGs that contain distance information when used with compatible lenses. The high-quality images captured by Canon EOS cameras will serve as surface textures, resulting in remarkably realistic 3D models.

Simplified Workflow and Customization

The process is designed to be straightforward. Photographers can import their captured images into the Dual Pixel 3D Converter application on their PC. The software then converts these images into 3D models. Users have the flexibility to generate a complete 3D model, including the background, or to isolate and extract the main subject.

Further enhancing the user experience, the application allows for adjustments to the perceived depth and detail of the 3D models. Users can choose to accentuate the sense of relief and texture for a more dramatic visual impact or opt for a subtler, more natural representation of depth. This level of customization ensures that the generated models can be tailored to specific artistic or practical requirements.

Beyond Static Models

Canon’s new software doesn’t stop at static 3D models. It also offers the capability to add simple animations and custom backgrounds, allowing users to generate preview videos of their creations. This feature provides a dynamic way to visualize the final 3D output.

Moreover, the surface textures of the 3D models can be replaced with images that have been edited in image processing software. This allows for fine-tuning of color and brightness, offering even greater control over the model’s appearance. The generated 3D models are designed to be compatible with popular 3D editing software, facilitating seamless integration into existing professional workflows.

Expanding Dual Pixel 3D Technology

Canon plans to extend the reach of its Dual Pixel 3D technology beyond consumer applications. In 2026, the company intends to offer solutions for businesses, aiming to embed this technology into existing workflows and systems. Potential applications are vast, spanning areas such as automated photo check-ins, e-commerce product visualization, and advertising campaigns.

By making sophisticated 3D model creation accessible from a single image, Canon’s Dual Pixel 3D Converter is poised to become an invaluable tool for photographers, 3D artists, and businesses looking to leverage the power of three-dimensional content.
