BMW has officially inaugurated its new battery assembly plant in Straßkirchen, Bavaria, marking a significant step in its electrification strategy. The facility is now in full production, supplying advanced sixth-generation high-voltage batteries for the new generation of the BMW i3.

State-of-the-Art Production Facility

The new plant, located in the Lower Bavarian town of Straßkirchen, covers an impressive 60 hectares and represents a total investment of approximately 1 billion euros. Construction began in April 2024, with pilot production commencing in March 2026. A key feature of this facility is its commitment to sustainability; it operates entirely without fossil fuels and requires no water for its processes.

In line with BMW’s circular economy principles, the battery cells procured for assembly incorporate recycled cobalt, lithium, and nickel, underscoring the company’s dedication to responsible sourcing and resource management.

Future Production Capacity

Once operating at full capacity, the Straßkirchen plant is projected to employ around 1,600 people. The facility is equipped with two production lines designed to produce hundreds of high-voltage batteries daily. This substantial output is crucial for meeting the growing demand for BMW’s electric vehicles, particularly the new-generation i3.

Local and International Recognition

Markus Söder, the Minister-President of Bavaria, attended the opening ceremony and lauded the new facility. He stated:

“The batteries produced here are high-tech products ‘Made in Bavaria,’ and they are internationally competitive, even when compared with competitors, including those from China.”

Söder’s remarks highlight the strategic importance of the plant not only for BMW’s global electric vehicle ambitions but also for bolstering Bavaria’s reputation as a hub for advanced manufacturing and technological innovation.

BMW’s Electrification Push

The opening of the Straßkirchen plant is a pivotal moment in BMW’s ongoing transition to electric mobility. The company has set ambitious goals for increasing the proportion of fully electric vehicles in its sales portfolio. The new sixth-generation batteries are designed for enhanced performance, range, and charging capabilities, directly contributing to the improved user experience of future BMW electric models.

This investment in domestic battery production capacity reinforces BMW’s commitment to securing its supply chain and maintaining technological leadership in the rapidly evolving automotive industry. The facility is expected to play a vital role in the production of the highly anticipated new generation of the BMW i3, further solidifying BMW’s position in the premium electric vehicle segment.
