Apple Executive Chairman Tim Cook met with China’s Minister of Commerce Wang Wentao on October 15th to discuss crucial topics including Sino-US trade relations, the development of artificial intelligence, and Apple’s business operations within China. The meeting, held at the Ministry of Commerce, underscored the ongoing dialogue between the US tech giant and the Chinese government.
Sino-US Economic Ties and AI Governance
Minister Wang Wentao highlighted the positive outcomes of Sino-US economic consultations, guided by the consensus between the two heads of state to build a constructive strategic relationship based on respect, fairness, and reciprocity. He articulated China’s stance on AI development, advocating for a secure, controllable, inclusive, and beneficial approach, emphasizing cooperation in AI governance.
Wang expressed his hope that Apple could act as a bridge, contributing to the sustained and positive development of Sino-US economic relations. He further emphasized China’s commitment to high-level opening up, continuous improvement of its business environment, expansion of its consumer market, and the growth of green supply chains. These advancements, he noted, would provide broader opportunities for multinational corporations like Apple to transform their investments in China towards intelligent, green, and innovative directions. The Minister encouraged Apple to continue its deep engagement with the Chinese market and share in the opportunities presented by Chinese modernization.
Apple’s Commitment to the Chinese Market
Tim Cook echoed a positive outlook on China’s development prospects. He affirmed Apple’s intention to further expand its business operations in China and expressed a willingness to play an active role in promoting the stable and healthy development of US-China economic relations.
Upcoming Apple Intelligence Rollout in China
In related news, earlier reports indicated that Cook confirmed Apple Intelligence, along with related large language models such as Alibaba’s Qwen, have received approval for a beta version release to Chinese users later in October. Cook shared that the initial features will include real-time translation, writing tools, and photo editing capabilities like a photo-clearing tool. However, he clarified that the AI-powered Siri will not be part of this initial rollout.
“We are very excited that the first core Apple Intelligence features will be able to be launched slowly,” Cook stated, expressing enthusiasm for the phased introduction of these advanced AI capabilities in China.
This development signals Apple’s ongoing efforts to integrate its latest technological advancements with local market needs and regulatory frameworks, aiming to deepen its roots in one of its most significant global markets.
