Apple TV+ is celebrating a banner period, achieving its highest single-week viewership since its launch. This surge in viewership is attributed to a combination of critical acclaim, highlighted by a remarkable 29 Emmy Award wins, and the successful rollout of new, highly anticipated content.
Emmy Dominance Fuels Viewership Surge
Just a few weeks prior to this record-breaking week, Apple TV+ secured an impressive 29 Emmy Awards. Among the major wins, the breakout hit series ‘Widow’s Bay’ (also referred to as ‘寡妇湾’ in the source) was a standout, clinching 14 awards on its own, including the prestigious award for Best Comedy Series. This critical success appears to have directly translated into increased viewer engagement.
The momentum generated by the Emmy wins was further amplified by the concurrent release of new content. The latest season of the popular series ‘Slow Horses’ (also known as ‘流人’) premiered, alongside the highly anticipated film ‘Mayday’ (also known as ‘求救信号’), starring Ryan Reynolds and Kenneth Branagh. Additionally, the beloved series ‘Ted Lasso’ (also known as ‘足球教练’) launched its fourth season, contributing significantly to the platform’s viewership spike.
‘Mayday’ and ‘Widow’s Bay’ Lead the Charge
According to reports, the week of September 14th saw Apple TV+ achieve its highest single-week viewership numbers ever, marking a substantial 67% year-over-year increase. The film ‘Mayday’, which debuted directly on the streaming service on September 4th, has become the platform’s best-performing film premiere, accumulating 8.7 million views in its first week in the U.S. market alone, according to Luminate’s weekly charts for September 4-10. It maintained strong performance, ranking second in its second week.
Apple has stated that ‘Mayday’, after its initial 18 days on the platform, became the highest-grossing film premiere in Apple TV+ history.
The impact of the Emmys on viewership is also evident in the performance of ‘Widow’s Bay’. In the week following the awards ceremony, the series saw a staggering 280% increase in weekly viewership compared to the previous week, following its 14 Emmy wins.
Another beneficiary of the Emmy buzz is the series ‘Pluribus’, which garnered six awards, including Best Actress in a Drama Series for Rhea Seehorn. Apple’s data indicates that viewership for ‘Pluribus’ surged by 200% week-over-week after the Emmy awards ceremony.
Global Reach and Strategic Bundling
The reported surge in viewership was particularly pronounced in key international markets, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Brazil, Mexico, Germany, India, Poland, and Spain, indicating a strong global appeal for Apple TV+’s content.
Beyond the direct impact of awards and new releases, Apple’s recent strategic move to bundle Apple TV+ with iCloud+ subscriptions may also be playing a role in boosting viewership. Earlier this month, Apple began including Apple TV+ at no additional cost with iCloud+ subscriptions in over 100 countries and regions. This initiative has not only expanded the streaming service’s reach into 59 new markets but also increased its overall global coverage to 170 countries and territories.
Apple TV+ is available as a standalone subscription for $4.99 per month (or $14.99 per month for the bundle including Apple Music, Apple Arcade, and Apple Fitness+) or as part of the Apple One bundle. The recent expansion of iCloud+ benefits, including the added value of Apple TV+, offers consumers a more compelling package and may be contributing to the platform’s growing subscriber base and engagement.
