Tim Cook, Apple’s Executive Chairman, has confirmed that Apple Intelligence is set to launch a beta version in China by the end of October. This marks a significant step in bringing Apple’s latest AI capabilities to the Chinese market.
Key Features and Approvals
During an interview with Chinese media in Shanghai, Cook revealed that the initial release will include core features such as real-time translation, writing tools, and a photo editing tool for object removal. However, he specified that the advanced Siri AI functionality will not be part of this initial beta release in China.
“We are very pleased that the first set of core Apple Intelligence features can be gradually rolled out,” Cook stated, expressing optimism about the integration of AI into Apple’s ecosystem for Chinese users.
It was previously reported that the AI features approved for China involve models from Alibaba, specifically their Tongyi Qianwen large language model and Tongyi Wanxiang, an image and video generation tool. These models are expected to power the upcoming Apple Intelligence features.
Future Rollout and International Comparisons
While this is a beta release, reports suggest a more comprehensive rollout is planned. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman had previously indicated that Apple aimed to officially push Apple Intelligence to Chinese users with the iOS 18.3 system update in December. The functionality in this planned December release is expected to be largely consistent with the version first launched internationally in 2024.
Government Engagement
The announcement follows a meeting between Cook and Chinese Minister of Commerce Wang Wentao. The discussion covered topics such as Sino-US economic and trade relations, the development of artificial intelligence, and Apple’s business operations in China.
Minister Wang emphasized China’s stance on AI development, advocating for security, controllability, universal benefit, and collaborative governance. He expressed hope that Apple could serve as a bridge, contributing to the stable and positive growth of Sino-US economic relations. In response, Cook affirmed Apple’s positive outlook on China’s development and reiterated the company’s commitment to expanding its business within the country.
Broader Context
The approval and upcoming release of Apple Intelligence in China are also linked to the necessary filings for large model numbers in China. Previous reports have indicated that models like Apple Intelligence, Tongyi Wanxiang, and Tongyi Qianwen have received the necessary approvals for use with devices like the iPhone 15 Pro and subsequent models in China.
The involvement of local Chinese AI providers, such as Alibaba and Baidu, has been highlighted as crucial for enabling these advanced AI features within the region, aligning with both Apple’s global strategy and China’s domestic technological landscape.
