The latest update that Apple has released for the iPhone allows T-Mobile customers – a select few for now – to send text messages even in places where there is no coverage. iOS 18.3 adds support for SpaceX and T-Mobile’s satellite service, which is currently being tested after the companies opened up beta testing in December. As Bloomberg notes, the service was previously only compatible with certain Android phones, including Samsung models such as the Z Fold and S24, as well as some Android 15 devices. Meanwhile, Apple already has a partnership with Globalstar that gives users the ability to send text messages when they are out of coverage.
Reportedly, users who have registered to participate in the beta testing of the new service have started receiving messages. “Now you can stay connected with text messages via satellite from virtually anywhere,” the message says, according to Bloomberg. And it asks iPhone users to “update to iOS 18.3” to “start enjoying coverage outside.” Once they download the update, they will see a toggle in their cellular settings to activate this feature.
For now, the direct call service to cell phones only offers text messages. If a beta tester finds himself in rural areas or other places where there is usually no coverage, he will be able to use Starlink’s satellite network to send a message. In the future, there are plans to add voice and data communications to give people more options in remote locations.
