Amazon’s first-ever color reader has just gone on sale, and users who have received their pre-orders are already dissatisfied, with some returning their Kindle Colorsoft or exchanging it for a new one.
As first reported by The Verge, some users have noticed a yellow bar at the bottom of the Kindle Colorsoft display, which has led to a rather dismal 2.6 star rating (at the time of writing) on Amazon’s US page.
In fact, the color change is not uniform for all users. According to a discussion of the issue on Reddit, some users are also seeing discoloration along the vertical edge as well as along the bottom of the screen. Others aren’t too bothered by the yellowing, but have returned their device because of a “corner dotted with dead pixels.”
However, it seems that not everyone is disappointed with their purchase – other Kindle Colorsoft customers seem to be very happy with their new reader, and user reviews on Amazon are mixed.
It is not yet clear whether the discoloration is due to a software or hardware issue, but according to a post in the original Reddit thread, Amazon says it is aware of the problem and is working on a solution. This could mean it’s just a software glitch, but if the lighting on the screen is uneven, it’s most likely due to faulty hardware and a firmware update may not help.
