Apple’s exclusive streaming deal for Formula 1 in the United States has been a success, and the tech giant is expected to bid for broadcasting rights in additional markets as opportunities arise, according to F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali.

Apple’s Growing Role in F1 Broadcasting

Speaking during a recent Liberty Media earnings call, Domenicali expressed satisfaction with the partnership in the US, where Apple TV has been broadcasting all F1 races live and on-demand since the start of the year. “We are very happy with the collaboration in the US,” Domenicali stated, adding that the company anticipates Apple’s entry into more markets when rights become available.

This move signals a potential global expansion for Apple’s sports broadcasting ambitions, leveraging its existing infrastructure and reach. The exclusive US deal has likely provided valuable insights into the F1 audience and the technical requirements for delivering high-quality live sports content.

F1’s Multi-Platform Licensing Strategy

Despite the positive developments with Apple, Formula 1 does not intend to grant global broadcasting rights to a single platform. The racing series prefers a fragmented approach, aiming to secure the most suitable media partners in different regions to create a diverse portfolio of licensing agreements.

This strategy allows F1 to maximize its reach and cater to local preferences while also driving innovation and competition among broadcasters. Liberty Media CEO Derek Chang highlighted that having a potential contender like Apple in other markets could enhance F1’s leverage in product development and commercial negotiations.

The Chinese Market: A Case Study

In China, F1’s broadcasting landscape has seen shifts. Tencent initially partnered with F1 in 2018, offering live streams across platforms like Tencent Sports, Tencent Video, and QQ. However, Tencent did not renew its contract for the 2022 season, leading to China Telecom briefly holding streaming rights for some races that year.

Tencent subsequently re-entered the picture, signing a digital broadcasting agreement for the 2023–2024 seasons and extending it through to the 2027 season. This ensures Tencent continues to be the exclusive digital media rights holder in mainland China.

Future Prospects and Market Dynamics

The F1 CEO’s comments suggest a strategic openness to engaging with major tech players like Apple, while maintaining a balanced approach to rights distribution. This dual strategy aims to capitalize on the growing demand for live sports streaming and the technological capabilities of global platforms, without relinquishing control over its content distribution.

As F1 continues to grow in popularity worldwide, the competition for broadcasting rights is expected to intensify. Apple’s potential expansion into more territories could reshape the media landscape for motorsport, offering fans new ways to experience the thrill of Formula 1.
