What Color is the Moon? NASA Reveals Its Many Hues

The Moon, often perceived as a single shade of gray, actually displays a surprisingly diverse palette of colors, influenced by our own planet’s atmosphere. A stunning compilation of images captured over a decade by an Italian astrophotographer reveals the Moon’s vibrant transformations, offering a new perspective on our familiar celestial neighbor.

Atmospheric Effects Paint the Moon

While the Moon itself is a brown-tinged gray when viewed from space, its appearance from Earth is dramatically altered by the conditions in our atmosphere. When the Moon is low on the horizon, a red or yellow hue is common. This occurs because its light must travel through more of Earth’s atmosphere, scattering away the shorter blue wavelengths. The presence of fine dust particles can further enhance this effect.

Rare Blue Moons and Other Mysteries

Even rarer is a blue-colored Moon, which can indicate an atmosphere carrying larger dust particles. The appearance of a purple Moon remains a bit of a cosmic enigma, possibly resulting from a combination of atmospheric factors. The collection also includes a dramatic image of the Moon during a total lunar eclipse in 2018, where it glowed a faint red as Earth’s shadow engulfed it, with sunlight refracted through our atmosphere.
