Ouyang Minggao, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, has predicted that lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries will continue to dominate China’s domestic power and energy storage battery markets for the next ten years. His remarks were made at the 33rd Annual Conference and Exhibition of the Chinese Society of Automotive Engineers, held in Suzhou from October 27-30.

China’s Battery Market Outlook

According to a report by Tencent Auto, Ouyang Minggao anticipates that China’s power battery shipments will nearly double by 2030, rising from 1875 GWh in 2025. He firmly believes that LFP batteries will remain at the forefront of both the domestic power and energy storage sectors throughout the coming decade.

The Chinese power battery industry is expected to maintain its growth trajectory and continue its global leadership. Ouyang Minggao emphasized the need for the industry to pursue two parallel technological paths simultaneously. The first path, represented by LFP batteries, focuses on achieving low costs, high safety, and long lifespans. The second path, exemplified by ternary batteries, aims for higher energy density.

Advancements in Battery Technology

Addressing the topic of solid-state batteries, Ouyang Minggao clarified the distinction between current “semi-solid-state batteries” and true all-solid-state batteries. He stated that many products currently labeled as “semi-solid-state” are, in essence, hybrid solid-liquid batteries. The actual safety enhancement achieved by hybrid solid-liquid technology is dependent on specific materials and manufacturing processes, and therefore, adopting this technology does not automatically guarantee increased battery safety.

He further stressed that the development of high-energy-density batteries must still prioritize safety. The practical application of new technologies should proceed incrementally, rather than solely focusing on achieving higher energy density figures.

This perspective highlights a measured approach to battery innovation, balancing the drive for improved performance with the non-negotiable requirement for safety and cost-effectiveness, particularly for widespread adoption in the Chinese market.
