Foxconn, the global manufacturing giant known for assembling Apple’s iPhones, is setting its sights on a significant expansion in the artificial intelligence (AI) server market. The company anticipates capturing half of the global AI server market share within the next few years, according to statements made by Chairman Young Liu.

Expanding AI Server Footprint

During a recent interview with CNBC, Liu revealed that Foxconn currently holds approximately 40% of the global AI server market. He expressed optimism that this figure would rise to around 45% by next year, with a long-term goal of reaching 50% in the coming years. This strategic push underscores the company’s commitment to leveraging the robust demand for AI infrastructure.

The AI infrastructure sector has become a crucial growth engine for Foxconn, moving beyond its traditional role as a hardware assembler. Liu projects that within the next three to five years, AI infrastructure will contribute between 60% and 65% of Foxconn’s total revenue. This forecast specifically excludes end-side AI devices where AI and machine learning algorithms run directly on local hardware.

Robust Demand and Production Capacity

The demand for AI infrastructure orders remains exceptionally strong, with Foxconn’s production capacity fully booked for at least the next eighteen months. The primary clients for these AI servers are AI model developers and cloud service providers. While government and enterprise clients are yet to fully embrace AI technologies, the overall market trend indicates sustained and powerful growth.

US Production Expansion

In addition to its global ambitions, Foxconn plans to significantly scale up its production capabilities in the United States. Liu indicated that the company intends to move further upstream in the supply chain to better cater to the demands of the US market. Recognizing the higher manufacturing costs in the US, Foxconn will initially prioritize the production of higher-margin products such as AI server cabinets and data center equipment.

Liu believes that as the scale of US-based production increases, manufacturing costs will eventually decrease. This expansion aims to solidify Foxconn’s position within the AI infrastructure supply chain, extending its business scope from servers and cabinets to encompass entire data centers and computing services.

Prudent Investment in AI

Despite the booming AI market, Liu cautioned against unchecked investment. He emphasized the critical need for strict control over investment scale, stating bluntly that “over-investment will ruin the company.” This indicates a balanced approach to growth, prioritizing sustainable expansion over rapid, potentially risky, scaling.

Foxconn’s annual investment in the AI sector is expected to exceed its previous projections of $3 billion to $5 billion. The exact amount will depend on the progress of vertical integration initiatives within the company. This significant investment highlights Foxconn’s dedication to staying at the forefront of AI technology development and manufacturing.

Mitigating Client-Specific Risks

Addressing concerns about potential impacts from major clients reducing AI expenditures, Liu suggested that a decline in demand from a single client could be offset by growth in other business areas. However, he acknowledged that a widespread downturn across the entire AI industry would present a more significant challenge for Foxconn and the broader AI supply chain.
