Last week, EA confirmed the closure of the historic BioWare studio, known for its acclaimed Dragon Age series and the cancellation of its upcoming Mass Effect title. A new report from Bloomberg, citing anonymous sources familiar with the matter, reveals that EA’s decision to close BioWare was largely driven by the opportunity to develop a new installment in the Star Wars: Battlefront franchise.
Strategic Pivot Amidst Financial Pressure
According to multiple sources, EA executives were in the process of reassessing the company’s game development pipeline for the coming years. This review was reportedly influenced by significant financial pressures, including a substantial $18 billion debt incurred after the company’s acquisition by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund.
At the time, EA had outlined plans for two ambitious science-fiction action games, each projected to cost hundreds of millions of dollars to produce. One was the next installment in the Mass Effect series, believed to be tentatively titled Mass Effect: Universe. The other was Star Wars: Battlefront 3.
Prioritizing Star Wars Over Mass Effect
Ultimately, EA opted to allocate its resources towards Star Wars: Battlefront 3 and, consequently, shut down BioWare. The company’s rationale, as reported, was a belief that the new Star Wars game held a greater potential for commercial success compared to a new Mass Effect title.
Previous reporting from Variety indicated that EA had informed its employees that DICE and Respawn would be collaborating on a “future project,” widely believed to be Star Wars: Battlefront 3. This move suggests a strategic consolidation of talent towards established franchises with broad appeal.
Contributing Factors Beyond Franchise Choice
While the choice between Star Wars and Mass Effect is presented as a primary driver for BioWare’s closure, the Bloomberg report also acknowledges other contributing factors. These reportedly include a perceived decline in the critical reception of BioWare’s recent titles and internal studio dynamics that may have influenced EA’s decision-making process.
In an official statement, EA described the decision as a mutual one reached after months of planning, evaluation, and analysis. The company cited a careful consideration of the evolving business landscape, industry trends, and long-term strategic priorities. “While decisions like these are never easy, we ultimately have to make tough choices to allow our teams to focus on the opportunities that are most important to the company’s future, including investing in new projects within our product lineup,” the statement read.
This strategic shift underscores EA’s commitment to leveraging its most valuable intellectual properties and optimizing resource allocation in a competitive market. The future of the Dragon Age and Mass Effect franchises, beyond the projects EA has already committed to, remains uncertain following the closure of the studio that defined them.
