Tech enthusiasts and CNET journalists are meticulously monitoring the durability of the first folding iPhone Duo through repeated bending. Latest reports indicate the device has successfully passed the 100,000 fold cycle mark without any apparent damage to its screen or hinge mechanism.

Endurance Undergoing Rigorous Testing

The endurance test, which commenced three days ago, is being conducted at CNET’s laboratories in Louisville, Kentucky. The iPhone Duo subjected to the trial was purchased directly from retail. The bending and unfolding process is automated by a custom-built mechanical device nicknamed the “Fold-a-Phone.”

CNET is livestreaming the entire testing process on its YouTube channel, allowing viewers to observe the smartphone’s continuous cycle of operation and engage with editors via live chat. Beyond assessing the hinge’s longevity, the team is also tracking the fluidity of the unfolding animation as the number of folds increases.

Day Three Results

By the close of the third day, CNET’s team had logged 103,108 folding cycles. Both the device’s screen and hinge are reportedly still in full working order. CNET representatives have stated their intention to continue the test until the device eventually fails, aiming to gather comprehensive data on the wear resistance of the iPhone Duo’s first-generation hinge.

“We’ll keep monitoring to understand how the iPhone Duo’s first hinge holds up under extreme stress,” CNET representatives noted.

Previous observations during the test had already suggested high mechanism resilience. Notably, after approximately 32,000 folds, the tactile feel of opening and closing the smartphone had changed very little. However, it’s worth noting that another iPhone Duo unit in earlier, separate tests experienced screen cracking after an attempt at reverse folding.

These trials are crucial for understanding the real-world durability of foldable smartphones, a technology still in its nascent stages. CNET’s testing results provide valuable insights for consumers considering the purchase of such devices.
