Tamron has officially launched its highly anticipated 16-50mm F2.8 A APS-C zoom lens, available for both Sony E-mount and Canon RF-mount cameras. The lens, designated Model B091, is now on sale for 2489 Yuan for both mount versions.

Key Features and Availability

The new Tamron 16-50mm F2.8 A lens boasts a constant F2.8 aperture across its entire zoom range, making it a versatile tool for various shooting conditions, from low light to achieving shallow depth of field.

The lens’s optical construction features 10 groups and 14 elements. It is equipped with a VXD linear motor focus system, designed to provide fast and precise autofocus performance suitable for both still photography and video recording. The lens also includes a 7-blade circular aperture, with a minimum aperture of F16.

Designed with durability in mind, the lens incorporates a moisture-resistant construction and an anti-fouling coating, which helps protect the front element from smudges and makes it easier to clean.

Tamron has announced staggered release dates for different mounts:

  • Sony E-mount / Canon RF-mount: October 29, 2026
  • Nikon Z-mount: November 19, 2026
  • Fujifilm X-mount: December 17, 2026

Focusing and Magnification

The lens offers impressive close-focusing capabilities. At the wide-angle end, the minimum focusing distance is 0.15 meters, with a maximum magnification ratio of 1:4.5. For telephoto shooting, the minimum focusing distance is 0.29 meters, and the maximum magnification ratio is 1:4.8.

Taking the Sony version as an example, the lens measures 79.6mm in length and weighs 305g. These specifications suggest a relatively compact and lightweight lens, ideal for APS-C camera systems where portability is often a key consideration.

The constant F2.8 aperture combined with the wide focal range of 16-50mm makes this lens suitable for a broad spectrum of photographic genres, including landscapes, street photography, portraits, and general-purpose shooting.

The adoption of the VXD linear motor focus system is a significant advantage, as it promises quiet and smooth autofocus, which is particularly beneficial for videographers who need reliable and unobtrusive focus tracking.

The addition of RF and Z-mount versions also expands Tamron’s APS-C lens offerings for mirrorless systems, providing more choices for photographers invested in these ecosystems.

Pricing at 2489 Yuan positions the Tamron 16-50mm F2.8 A lens competitively within the APS-C lens market, offering a compelling blend of features, performance, and value.
