In a significant move for deep space exploration, former Artemis II Commander Reid Wiseman has been appointed as the Deputy Director of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) and Associate Vice President at Caltech. This appointment places a seasoned astronaut, fresh from a historic lunar flyby, at the forefront of managing JPL, a renowned center for robotics and deep space missions. Wiseman’s transition marks a new chapter for both him and JPL, leveraging his extensive operational experience and leadership to drive future scientific endeavors.

A New Command for an Artemis Pioneer

Reid Wiseman, who commanded the Artemis II mission – humanity’s first crewed journey around the Moon in over 50 years – will bring his unique perspective and expertise to JPL starting November 30, 2026. During the Artemis II mission, Wiseman, along with his crewmates, traveled a record-breaking 695,081 miles from Earth. NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman lauded Wiseman’s career, stating, “Reid has spent his career at the edge of what is possible, and he has the technical judgment, operational experience, and leadership to help push that edge farther.” Wiseman expressed his excitement, remarking, “What an awesome time in my career to join this team and to try and push humanity and push our understanding of the solar system and the universe.”

Leading the Charge in Deep Space Exploration

At JPL, Wiseman will play a crucial role in the strategic leadership and operational excellence of the laboratory, which is managed by Caltech for NASA. His responsibilities will include overseeing laboratory operations, fostering institutional planning, and ensuring compliance with NASA requirements. JPL, with its nearly 90-year history of groundbreaking missions, is at a pivotal moment, and Wiseman’s appointment signals a continued commitment to pushing the boundaries of robotic and human exploration. Caltech President Ray Jayawardhana highlighted Wiseman’s fit for the role, noting, “His pioneering spirit coupled with unbounded curiosity make him a natural fit for Caltech and JPL, a force-multiplier for a community whose daring continues to push the limits of humanity’s reach.”
