Apple is reportedly developing a new ‘Reachability’ feature for its upcoming foldable iPhone, codenamed iPhone Duo, to enhance usability for left-handed users. The innovation aims to allow users to reposition the ‘main content’ of the cover screen to either the left or right side, catering to individual gripping habits.

Adapting to User Needs

This move comes in response to some user feedback suggesting difficulties for left-handed individuals operating the external display. However, Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman, who revealed the development, also noted that these concerns might be overstated. Several left-handed users have indicated that the current cover screen interaction logic hasn’t significantly impacted their daily use.

The internal screen, typically requiring two-handed operation, is less affected by left or right-handed preferences, suggesting the new feature primarily targets the cover screen experience where one-handed use is more common.

Market Predictions for Apple’s Foldable

The anticipation for Apple’s first foldable iPhone is high, with industry analysts projecting significant market impact. Research firm IDC previously estimated that the initial shipments of the iPhone Duo could exceed 10 million units in its first year. Furthermore, IDC predicts Apple could capture approximately 40% of the global foldable phone market share by 2027.

Goldman Sachs maintains an optimistic outlook, forecasting shipments of 13 million units for the iPhone Duo in 2026. Their projections extend to 33 million units by 2027, underscoring the expected demand and Apple’s potential dominance in the foldable segment.

The Evolution of Smartphone Design

The introduction of a customizable ‘Reachability’ mode on the cover screen signifies Apple’s commitment to user-centric design. As foldable technology matures, manufacturers are increasingly focusing on ergonomic and intuitive user interfaces. Features like this can be crucial in differentiating products in a competitive market and ensuring a seamless experience for a diverse user base.

While the specifics of the ‘Reachability’ mode’s implementation are yet to be fully detailed, its focus on adapting the interface based on user preference is a significant step. This addresses a common challenge with larger screen devices and offers a glimpse into how Apple plans to make its first foldable device both functional and accessible.

The foldable market is still in its growth phase, and Apple’s entry is expected to accelerate its adoption. Features designed to improve usability, especially for underrepresented user groups like left-handed individuals, will be key to the iPhone Duo’s success.
