Zhang Xue, the visionary founder of “Zhang Xue Motorcycles,” is set to make a remarkable return to the water, attempting to break the Guinness World Record for the furthest distance a modified motorcycle can travel on open water. This daring feat, scheduled for today in Xiaopo Village, Guogongping Town, Mayang Miao Autonomous County, Huaihua City, Hunan Province, sees Zhang Xue personally piloting the specially modified MX450 motorcycle.

A Decade-Long Dream Rekindled

This highly anticipated challenge marks a significant personal milestone for Zhang Xue, who first attempted this record 17 years ago. Speaking to a Xinhua News Agency reporter prior to the event, Zhang Xue reflected on his motivations. “Everyone, after not succeeding in something, carries some lingering regret,” he explained. “Coupled with the fact that the MX450 has now been developed and the hardware conditions are met, combined with such a great opportunity, it’s the perfect time to rectify that past regret.”

The original attempt in 2009, when Zhang Xue was just 22, saw him ride a motorcycle fitted with makeshift metal plating on its wheels into the water on a CCTV program. Despite four attempts, all ended in submersion, with his furthest distance reaching only 20 meters, falling just shy of his ambitious 26-meter goal.

Why Ride Himself? It’s Like Gaming!

When asked why he chose to be the one in the saddle again, Zhang Xue’s response was characteristically spirited. “It’s something fun! It’s like if you love playing a game, you wouldn’t let anyone else play your account, would you? Playing the game itself is the enjoyment!” This analogy highlights his personal investment and the sheer thrill he derives from pushing boundaries.

From Apprentice to Industry Leader

The journey from a promising but ultimately unsuccessful attempt 17 years ago to today’s world-record challenge is a testament to Zhang Xue’s perseverance and growth. Over the years, he has transformed from a repair apprentice into the founder of “Zhang Xue Motorcycles.” The brand has achieved significant success, notably securing the runner-up position in the rider standings and third place in the manufacturer standings at the World Superbike Championship (WSBK) Spanish round finale this year.

Meticulous Preparation and Renewed Confidence

The idea to revisit the “water walking” record resurfaced in March of this year when someone mentioned his past experience. This sparked a period of dedicated preparation, with Zhang Xue and his team meticulously working on the project for over three months. Reflecting on the difference in mindset between the two attempts, Zhang Xue described the past as a time of greater unknowns and uncertainty, stating, “Back then, there was much more that was unknown, and I had no confidence at all.” In contrast, he now feels, “My mindset is much more stable this time, and my confidence is much higher.”

The current challenge aims to set a new Guinness World Record, with the initial target set at a distance of 40 kilometers, a significant leap from the previous attempt. The success of the MX450, a machine developed specifically for such extreme conditions, provides a strong foundation for achieving this ambitious goal.

Zhang Xue’s return to the “water walking” challenge is more than just an attempt to break a record; it’s a narrative of ambition, resilience, and the relentless pursuit of passion, proving that some dreams are worth chasing, even after 17 years.
