Samsung SDI is gearing up to enter the AI server market with a new cylindrical Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) battery, with mass production slated to begin as early as June 2027. The announcement, reported by The Korea Herald on October 13th, signals a significant strategic move for the battery manufacturer.

Focus on AI Server Backup Power

These new LFP batteries are specifically designed for use as Battery Backup Units (BBUs) in AI servers. Samples of this innovative product were showcased at the DCWA 2026 exhibition last month. Samsung SDI highlights that its proprietary structural technology has been instrumental in enhancing both the output power and capacity of these batteries, while simultaneously reinforcing their safety features.

Manufacturing Strategy in Malaysia

The production of the anode for these AI server batteries is planned for Samsung SDI’s second factory in Malaysia. This facility currently hosts production lines for ternary lithium batteries. To accommodate the distinct raw material requirements for both LFP and ternary lithium batteries, the factory will undergo significant upgrades, including the installation of specialized equipment such as mixers and raw material mixing storage tanks.

Boosting Cylindrical Battery Line Utilization

The introduction of LFP cylindrical batteries for AI server BBUs is expected to significantly improve the utilization rates of Samsung SDI’s existing cylindrical battery production lines. These lines have previously seen lower utilization, sometimes hovering just above 50%, due to a slowdown in demand from the electric vehicle (EV) and power tool sectors. This new application is poised to revitalize this segment of their manufacturing capacity.

Market Implications

The move by Samsung SDI to produce LFP batteries for AI servers reflects a broader industry trend. LFP batteries are gaining traction due to their cost-effectiveness, longer lifespan, and enhanced safety compared to some other lithium-ion chemistries. For AI servers, reliability and consistent power delivery are paramount, making robust backup solutions like BBUs critical. The demand for powerful AI infrastructure continues to surge, driving innovation and diversification in battery technology.

Samsung SDI’s strategic focus on LFP technology for this demanding application underscores their commitment to adapting to evolving market needs and leveraging their expertise in battery manufacturing to capture new growth opportunities in the burgeoning AI sector.
