The burgeoning energy storage sector in China has seen remarkable growth, with production of energy storage batteries exceeding 420 GWh in the first half of 2026. This significant output represents a year-on-year increase of 110%, underscoring the rapid expansion of the industry.
Dominant Growth and Cumulative Capacity
According to information shared at the 2026 World Energy Storage Conference held in Ningde, Fujian, the cumulative installed capacity of new energy storage systems reached over 153 million kilowatts by the end of June 2026. This figure is a staggering 50-fold increase compared to the beginning of the 14th Five-Year Plan period, highlighting the nation’s aggressive push towards renewable energy integration and grid stability.
The World Energy Storage Conference, now in its third year in Ningde, has become a crucial global forum, attracting over 50 countries and regions. Representatives from government bodies, leading experts, senior corporate executives, and industry organizations gather to discuss advancements and strategies in the energy storage field.
Government’s Stance on Healthy Competition
During the conference, Xiong Jijun, Vice Minister of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), delivered a speech emphasizing the significant achievements in China’s new energy storage industry. He outlined the next steps, focusing on balancing development with security. Key strategies include strengthening technological innovation, adhering to demand-driven development, fostering a global ecosystem, and, crucially, resolutely preventing “involutionary” or “cut-throat” competition.
The MIIT’s call to transition the industry from scale expansion to innovation-led development aims to ensure sustainable and high-quality growth. This directive comes as the sector experiences rapid scaling, which can often lead to intense price wars and potentially hinder long-term innovation and stability.
Addressing Market Dynamics
The concern over “involutionary competition” is not new. The MIIT, along with three other government departments, convened a symposium in April 2026 with companies in the power battery and energy storage battery sectors. The meeting explicitly stressed the importance of firmly resisting unreasonable and unfair competition practices to maintain a healthy and orderly market environment.
This proactive stance from the government aims to guide the industry towards a more sustainable competitive landscape, where technological advancement and quality are prioritized over sheer volume or aggressive pricing tactics that could undermine the sector’s long-term health and global competitiveness.
The rapid advancements and production volumes in China’s energy storage sector position it as a global leader, but the government’s focus on preventing detrimental competition signals a commitment to fostering an environment where innovation can thrive, ensuring the industry’s continued success and contribution to global energy transition goals.
