Ubisoft, the renowned video game publisher, is reportedly planning significant workforce reductions across its German studios. According to a report from gaming industry publication Game File, the company intends to cut approximately 100 positions across its Berlin, Düsseldorf, and Mainz locations.

Voluntary Departure Program Eyed

Ubisoft representatives have confirmed discussions with employee works councils regarding a voluntary departure program for staff at the three affected studios. The company aims to achieve these job cuts through voluntary departures rather than mandatory layoffs. As part of this initiative, Ubisoft is considering offering a compensation package equivalent to 1.5N, where ‘N’ likely refers to a standard severance multiplier.

Studio Roles and Impact

The Mainz studio is primarily responsible for the development of the acclaimed ‘Anno’ series. The Berlin and Düsseldorf studios, while contributing to key projects, mainly provide support functions. Recent projects involving these studios include ‘Rayman: Legends Definitive Edition’.

The Düsseldorf studio, which employs over 400 individuals, is expected to bear the brunt of these cuts, with potentially more than half of its workforce being affected. The Mainz and Berlin studios each have over 100 employees.

Broader Context of Ubisoft Restructuring

This news comes amid a period of restructuring for Ubisoft globally. The company recently announced plans to close its RedLynx studio in Finland and implement substantial layoffs at its Singapore studio. These measures highlight a broader trend of cost-saving and operational adjustments within the company as it navigates the evolving landscape of the video game industry.

The focus on voluntary departures aims to mitigate the impact on employee morale and potentially avoid the negative publicity often associated with large-scale layoffs. However, the significant number of planned reductions underscores the challenges faced by the company in the current market.

The ongoing consolidation and optimization efforts by major players in the gaming sector, including Ubisoft, suggest a strategic shift towards efficiency and a refocusing of resources on key franchises and future projects. Further details on the voluntary departure program and the timeline for these changes are expected to be released by Ubisoft in the coming weeks.
