Sony China has announced the upcoming release of its latest audio tool for content creators: the ECM-W5 wireless microphone system. This innovative system is set to launch in early November 2026, with pre-orders opening tonight. The ECM-W5 offers a compelling set of features, including support for 32-bit float recording, making it a significant addition to Sony’s lineup for videographers and podcasters.

Key Features of the ECM-W5 System

The ECM-W5 wireless microphone system is designed for high-quality audio capture and seamless integration with compatible Sony cameras. The system comprises the ECM-W5 wireless microphone itself, along with the ECM-W5R wireless receiver and the ECM-W5T wireless transmitter. Pricing is set at 2,799 yuan for the microphone, 1,099 yuan for the receiver, and 899 yuan for the transmitter.

High-Resolution Audio and 32-bit Float Recording

A standout feature of the ECM-W5 is its support for 32-bit float recording. This advanced technology allows for a much wider dynamic range, significantly reducing the risk of audio clipping and distortion, especially in unpredictable sound environments. The microphone supports sampling rates and bit depths of up to 96 kHz / 24-bit, with specific 32-bit float recording available at 48 KHz / 32-bit. This capability extends to direct recording into compatible Sony cameras, where the audio is wirelessly transmitted and embedded directly into the video file as a synchronized audio track. This eliminates the need for separate audio file management post-production.

Triple Backup Recording

Sony understands the critical importance of reliable audio capture. The ECM-W5 system offers a triple backup recording function, ensuring that users never lose their audio. This includes internal microphone recording, direct video recording with the camera, and the creation of a separate audio file. Each microphone unit is equipped with 64GB of internal storage, enabling automatic on-device recording upon startup. Recorded files can be easily exported to a computer via a USB Type-C cable, either from the charging case or by connecting directly to the microphone.

Wireless Monitoring and Advanced Audio Capture

For seamless audio monitoring, users can connect compatible Sony wireless headphones that support LE Audio directly to the receiver. The ECM-W5 receiver can also pick up audio from the microphones on connected Sony wireless headphones and record it onto the camera. Furthermore, when paired with compatible microphones, the system supports binaural recording, capturing a three-dimensional, immersive soundscape.

Power and Expandability

Powering the system is efficient. The ECM-W5R receiver draws power directly from the camera via the Mi Hot Shoe interface. The transmitter boasts an impressive single-use battery life of up to approximately 11 hours, providing ample power for extended shooting sessions. The ECM-W5R receiver can be paired with multiple ECM-W5T transmitters, supporting a one-receiver-to-four-transmitter configuration for multi-person recording scenarios. The ECM-W5T transmitter also offers flexibility by supporting external microphones, allowing for more customized audio setups.

With its advanced features like 32-bit float recording, triple backup, and versatile connectivity options, the Sony ECM-W5 wireless microphone system is poised to become an essential tool for professional and amateur video creators seeking high-quality, reliable audio solutions.
