Google.org has announced a significant investment of $36 million, distributed among 17 organizations that are leveraging Artificial Intelligence (AI) to accelerate scientific research and address critical global challenges in climate, health, and fundamental sciences.
The initiative, known as the Google.org Impact Challenge: AI for Science, launched earlier this year with the aim of identifying organizations employing AI for scientific breakthroughs. The program received applications from 30 countries.
Selected organizations will not only receive financial backing but also gain access to a six-month Google.org Accelerator program. This program will provide them with engineering support, technical mentorship, and access to Google’s infrastructure to help scale their innovative solutions.
Research Focus Areas and Projects
Climate Resilience and Environmental Sciences
- AfriClimate AI Limited is developing AI to forecast atmospheric conditions for deadly storm systems in Africa, aiming to extend warning times for flash floods from under three hours to over six hours.
- Inria Chile Research Center is building a multimodal global ocean foundation model to create a digital twin of Earth’s marine ecosystems.
- Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) is accelerating automated materials discovery by training AI agents to interpret experimental microscopic images independently.
- Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics, in partnership with TU Eindhoven, is bridging the gap between simulation and reality for clean fusion energy. They are using physics-informed AI to model the chaotic conditions within fusion reactors.
- The University of Texas at Austin is developing neural network models to expedite the design of compact fusion reactors.
- UC San Diego is creating an AI pipeline that extracts interpretable climate physics from Earth observation data, aiming to build next-generation climate models and identify optimal locations for new oceanographic data collection.
- University of Cambridge is speeding up the development of long-lasting sodium-ion batteries by combining physics-informed foundation models with microscopy to predict cathode degradation.
- University of Washington is using natural language processing for protein design with applications in sustainability, such as plastic degradation.
Health and Life Sciences
- AITHYRA Research Institute, in collaboration with EPFL, is investigating how viruses manipulate cells and creating an AI-designed protein library to find therapeutics for off-target proteins.
- Allen Institute is designing DNA sequences that target brain cells more susceptible to neurodegenerative diseases, openly sharing all models, sequences, and results.
- Australian National University is leading an international effort to move beyond trial-and-error in chemotherapy, advancing equitable precision oncology.
- National University of Singapore is predicting disease impact by mapping how genetic variants regulate RNA splicing at a population scale.
- New York University Grossman School of Medicine is working to uncover unknown causes of mutations by using AI to detect diverse types of DNA damage.
- University of California, Berkeley is transforming “black box” predictions into clear clinical biomarkers by extracting interpretable hypotheses from medical AI models.
- The University of Cape Town (UCT) is developing an AI-powered platform to map genetic variations in African drug-metabolizing genes, aiding medication selection and improving treatment safety.
- University of Pittsburgh is identifying genetic switches to accelerate the development of novel cardiac treatments by using a new geometric AI model to compare heart regeneration across species.
- University of Toronto is enabling computer-driven therapeutic drug design by mapping the design space for peptide therapeutics using an AI foundation model.
These organizations showcase a wide array of ideas, disciplines, and approaches to tackle some of the world’s most pressing challenges. Google.org is committed to supporting their work and witnessing the potential unlocked when scientific expertise and AI converge to solve problems that affect us all.
