Xbox Series X Supply Issues Persist Globally

Microsoft’s Xbox Series X gaming console is experiencing ongoing supply shortages across various international markets, including Europe and Latin America. This scarcity has led some retailers to inflate prices significantly, with the console reportedly selling for up to double its official recommended retail price (RRP).

Global Shortage Driven by Multiple Factors

Reports indicate that players are struggling to find the console at standard prices. One player, identified as Firmus_Anguis on the ResetEra forums, shared insights from Sweden, noting that only a single retailer currently stocks the Xbox Series X, and at a steep markup. The 1TB disc version of the Xbox Series X has an official RRP of 7,770 Swedish Kronor (approximately $730 USD at current exchange rates). However, the retailer in question was listing it for the equivalent of about $1,600 USD, a substantial increase from its suggested price.

This supply crunch isn’t a new phenomenon for Microsoft. The company acknowledged in June that the production of Xbox consoles was being hampered by shortages in storage devices and memory components. These industry-wide component shortages continue to affect the availability of numerous electronic devices, including gaming hardware.

‘GTA 6’ Hype and Memory Price Hikes Exacerbate Issues

Adding to the production challenges, the global increase in memory prices over the past year has put further strain on manufacturing costs and capacity. While Xbox boasts a strong library of games, its overall user base is smaller than that of Sony’s PlayStation. However, the recent surge in anticipation for Grand Theft Auto 6 (GTA 6), which has driven console purchases across the board, has also contributed to the demand for Xbox Series X. This has resulted in a situation where the console is in short supply, although the situation appears less acute than for the PlayStation 5 models.

Microsoft has previously stated that memory and storage shortages were impacting Xbox production.

Domestic Market Comparison

In contrast to the international market’s struggles, the Xbox Series X appears more readily available in China. The 1TB version of a new Xbox Series X is currently priced around 4,500-4,600 RMB (approximately $620-635 USD) domestically, with used units selling for 2,600-3,000 RMB ($360-415 USD). For comparison, the Sony PlayStation 5 Slim disc version with a 1TB drive is priced at around 4,200-4,500 RMB ($580-620 USD) for new units and 3,000-3,400 RMB ($415-470 USD) for used units in the same market.

The persistent supply issues for the Xbox Series X highlight the ongoing challenges within the global semiconductor and component supply chains, further complicated by strong consumer demand fueled by major game releases.
