The popular open-source media player, MPC-HC, has received a significant update with version 2.8.3, rolling out on October 8th. This latest release brings a fresh aesthetic inspired by the Windows 11 interface, introducing new themes for menus and dialog boxes, along with a native rounded corner option for pop-up menus on Windows 11.
Modernizing the Look and Feel
Users can now embrace a more contemporary look by enabling the new Windows 11-style themes. This option is accessible through the player’s settings, specifically under Options > Advanced > ModernThemeStyle. Even users on Windows 10 systems can opt to switch to this modern appearance, bringing a unified visual experience across different operating systems. For those running Windows 11, the update offers an even deeper integration by allowing the use of system-native pop-up menus, which will now feature the characteristic rounded corners as seen in the latest Windows iteration.
Under-the-Hood Improvements
Beyond the visual enhancements, MPC-HC 2.8.3 includes several important under-the-hood updates:
- The MPC Video Renderer has been updated to version 0.10.8.2600.
- The MediaInfo DLL has been upgraded to version 26.10.
- Improvements have been made to the parsing of CUE files, which are commonly used for organizing audio tracks on CDs.
Enhanced HDR Support
A notable addition in this release is the implementation of HLG tone mapping for both the EVR-CP and EVR-Sync renderers. HLG, or Hybrid Log-Gamma, is a format designed for broadcasting high dynamic range (HDR) video content. Tone mapping is the process by which the player adjusts the brightness and color range of HDR video to accurately display it on the user’s current screen, ensuring a better viewing experience for HDR content.
This update demonstrates MPC-HC’s continued commitment to staying current with modern operating system designs and enhancing its playback capabilities for the latest video formats. Users can look forward to a more visually cohesive experience, especially on Windows 11, alongside improvements in renderer performance and file handling.
