Sigma has officially launched its latest lens for APS-C mirrorless cameras: the 50-120mm F2.8 DC OS | Contemporary. This new telephoto zoom lens is designed to offer a versatile and lightweight option for photographers shooting with Sony E-mount, Fujifilm X-mount, and Canon RF-mount cameras.
Versatile Telephoto Reach with a Constant Aperture
The Sigma 50-120mm F2.8 DC OS | Contemporary lens provides an equivalent focal range of 75-180mm on full-frame cameras, making it ideal for a variety of shooting situations, from portraits to mid-range telephoto applications. A key feature is its constant F2.8 aperture across the entire zoom range, allowing for excellent performance in low light and the ability to achieve beautiful background blur (bokeh).
Lightweight and Compact Design
Sigma emphasizes the lens’s portability. Measuring just 99mm in length and weighing a mere 390g, this lens is engineered to minimize the burden on photographers during extended shooting sessions. This compact and lightweight design makes it a compelling choice for travel photographers or anyone who prioritizes mobility without compromising optical quality.
Advanced Optical Construction
Internally, the lens boasts a sophisticated optical formula consisting of 18 elements arranged in 13 groups. This construction includes one FLD (F Low Dispersion) glass element, three SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass elements, and four aspherical elements. This combination is designed to effectively correct various aberrations, including chromatic aberration and distortion, from the center of the image to the edges, ensuring high contrast and sharpness.
Fast and Quiet Autofocus, Effective Stabilization
For swift and silent autofocus performance, the lens is equipped with Sigma’s HLA (High-speed Linear Actuator) motor. This ensures that photographers can capture fleeting moments without distraction. Additionally, the lens features Sigma’s OS2 optical stabilization system. At the wide end (50mm), it provides up to 6.5 stops of image stabilization, while at the telephoto end (120mm), it offers up to 4.5 stops. This stabilization is crucial for achieving sharp images when shooting handheld in challenging lighting conditions or at slower shutter speeds.
Optimized for Photo and Video
Sigma has also paid attention to the needs of videographers. The optical design minimizes focus breathing, a common issue where the field of view changes slightly as focus is adjusted. This makes the lens suitable for both photography and videography, offering a seamless experience for creators who work across both mediums. The lens also includes physical controls such as a focus mode switch and an IS (Image Stabilization) on/off switch, along with a dust- and splash-proof construction and a water- and oil-repellent coating on the front element for added durability in various environments.
