Huawei’s innovative Mate XT 2 tri-fold smartphone has achieved a significant milestone, with shipments nearing 100,000 units. Richard Yu, Huawei’s Executive Director and Chairman of the Terminal BG, announced that the company anticipates total shipments to surpass one million units.

A Leader in Foldable Innovation

The Mate XT 2, unveiled in early September, represents Huawei’s second-generation tri-fold device. Speaking at an international media roundtable on September 29th, Richard Yu highlighted Huawei’s eight years of dedication to the foldable screen segment, positioning the company as a true pioneer in this field. He emphasized the substantial R&D investment and extensive reliability testing undertaken by Huawei to overcome the numerous technical challenges associated with foldable technology.

This commitment has translated into market dominance, with Huawei currently holding a commanding 75% share of the foldable phone market in China. The announcement of the Mate XT 2’s success was made during the HarmonyOS 7 and HUAWEI Mate XT 2 launch event, where Yu also shared that Huawei’s overall foldable phone shipments had exceeded the one million mark globally. Furthermore, Huawei enjoys the highest brand ‘first mention’ rate within the foldable device category.

Premium Pricing and Global Ambitions

Data indicates that Huawei’s tri-fold smartphones, encompassing both the Mate XT and Mate XTs series, are priced above 20,000 yuan (approximately $2,700 USD), underscoring their premium positioning in the market. Richard Yu also revealed plans to gradually introduce the Mate XT 2 to international markets, noting its strong reception in the Middle East and Asia-Pacific regions. He expressed a desire to expand its availability to other markets, including Europe.

Industry Context and Future Outlook

Huawei’s consistent innovation in foldable technology, despite facing external challenges, solidifies its position as a key player. The success of the Mate XT 2 not only bolsters Huawei’s foldable portfolio but also signals a growing consumer appetite for more complex and versatile mobile form factors. The company’s strategy of investing heavily in research and development appears to be paying off, allowing them to maintain a competitive edge and explore new market opportunities with their cutting-edge devices.

The tri-fold design offers a unique user experience, potentially merging the portability of a smartphone with the screen real estate of a small tablet. As Huawei continues to refine its foldable technology and expand its global reach, the foldable market is expected to see further growth and innovation.
