Tesla’s entry into the Indian market, which began with vehicle deliveries in September 2025, has seen a modest start, with fewer than 1,000 vehicles registered in the first 13 months. According to data compiled by Indian EV publication ElecTree, Tesla registered a total of 993 vehicles in India between September 2025 and September 2026. If we consider the first 12 full months of operation, the figure drops to 699 registered vehicles. This data serves as the closest approximation to actual sales figures, as Tesla does not publicly disclose country-specific sales details.

Tesla officially launched in India in July 2025, with the Model Y priced around $70,000, nearly double its price in the United States at the time. The first month of deliveries in September 2025 saw only 69 vehicle registrations, and this monthly figure was not surpassed in the subsequent eight months.

By the end of 2025, Tesla’s cumulative registrations in India stood at a mere 226 vehicles. The period between January and May 2026 saw an additional 202 registrations, with February marking a low point with only 29 vehicles registered. In response to the slow uptake, Tesla began offering price reductions on its initial stock of imported Model Y vehicles in India as early as January 2026.

Further complicating Tesla’s local strategy, the Indian Minister of Heavy Industries confirmed in May 2026 that Tesla would not be establishing a manufacturing plant in India. This means all vehicles sold in India will continue to be fully imported, subject to significant import duties. This situation directly impacts pricing and availability, making local production a key factor for broader market penetration.

However, September 2026 marked a new high for Tesla in India, with 294 vehicle registrations for the month. This surge appears to be a direct result of recent strategic adjustments made by the company. Tesla significantly reduced its prices across India and officially launched a six-seater version of the Model Y, named Model YL.

The six-seater Model YL was introduced on April 22, 2026, with a starting price of 6.199 million Indian Rupees (approximately $433,000 RMB). Deliveries for this variant began in June 2026. Notably, this larger, more spacious six-seater model was priced lower than the previously available five-seater Model Y Long Range, which was listed at 6.789 million Indian Rupees (approximately $474,000 RMB) and has since been removed from the Indian product lineup.

In late May 2026, Tesla implemented another price adjustment for the base Model Y. The price was slashed by 900,000 Indian Rupees (approximately $62,888 RMB), dropping from 5.989 million Indian Rupees ($418,000 RMB) to 5.089 million Indian Rupees ($356,000 RMB). This represented a substantial 15% price reduction, aiming to make the electric vehicle more accessible to Indian consumers.

These recent pricing strategies and the introduction of the six-seater Model YL seem to be positively impacting Tesla’s sales performance in India, as indicated by the strong registration numbers in September 2026. It remains to be seen if this momentum can be sustained in the long term for the electric vehicle giant in the Indian market.
