Microsoft is continuously enhancing its AI assistant, Copilot, integrating new features designed to boost transparency and reliability. Recently, a citation capability has been introduced to the Word text editor, allowing users to verify the sources of information provided by the artificial intelligence.

Addressing AI ‘Hallucinations’

One of the most significant challenges with generative AI models is the phenomenon known as ‘hallucinations.’ This occurs when AI provides inaccurate or entirely fabricated information, sometimes even inventing plausible-sounding but non-existent sources. These errors can stem from outdated training data or a misunderstanding of context.

The new citation feature in Copilot for Word aims to tackle this issue directly. Responses generated by Copilot will now be accompanied by links to original web pages or internal documents. This empowers users to easily follow these links, cross-reference original sources, and critically assess the accuracy and context of the information presented.

Microsoft emphasizes that this feature greatly improves the AI’s transparency, helping users understand the origin of Copilot’s information. This is particularly crucial for professional applications where data precision is paramount.

Other Copilot Enhancements

Beyond the citation functionality, Microsoft has also optimized the design and user interface of the Copilot chat window. For enterprise users, support for plugins and connectors for Copilot applications has been added, alongside the Work IQ feature to enhance productivity.

These improvements are not limited to Word. PowerPoint has also received new capabilities and connectors for Copilot, expanding its utility across the Microsoft 365 suite.

These updates underscore Microsoft’s commitment to developing AI tools that are not only powerful but also reliable and user-friendly, as individuals increasingly depend on artificial intelligence in their work.
