The BYD Racco, a pure electric K-car specifically designed for the Japanese market, has achieved a significant milestone, accumulating over 1800 orders within its first two months of launch. Introduced on July 28, 2026, the Racco has quickly garnered attention as BYD expands its presence in Japan.

BYD Racco: A New Contender in Japan’s EV Market

BYD Auto Japan President Atsuki Tofukuji announced that as of September 27, 2026, the Racco had received a total of 1,832 orders. This early success highlights the growing demand for compact, eco-friendly vehicles in Japan.

Model Variants and Pricing

The BYD Racco is available in three configurations:

  • 200: Offers a range of 210 km with a 22.4 kWh battery, priced at 2.145 million yen (approximately 91,268 RMB).
  • 300 Plus: Features a 320 km range, powered by a 35.84 kWh battery, and costs 2.398 million yen (approximately 102,000 RMB).
  • 300 Premium: The top-tier model, also with a 320 km range and a 35.84 kWh battery, is priced at 2.497 million yen (approximately 106,000 RMB).

Customer Preferences Emerge

Analysis of the order data reveals clear customer preferences. The premium 300 Premium variant has proven to be the most popular, accounting for a substantial 85% of all orders. This suggests that Japanese consumers are willing to invest more for higher specifications and features within the K-car segment.

In terms of aesthetics, the “Polar White” color emerged as the top choice, adorning 44% of the ordered vehicles. “Cheese Yellow” followed, capturing 20% of the market share for color options.

The customer base for the Racco also shows an interesting demographic. A significant 82% of buyers are new to the BYD brand, indicating the Racco’s success in attracting a fresh audience. Existing BYD owners looking to upgrade or add to their fleet represent 12% of orders, while referrals from friends and family make up the remaining 5%.

Addressing Production and Delivery Challenges

Despite the strong demand, BYD is facing a challenge with the power battery supply for the “300” series models, described as a cross-regional supply shortage. This constraint had previously led to a slowdown in deliveries for these variants. However, BYD Auto Japan has confirmed that deliveries for the 300 series commenced as planned in September. Currently, there is a backlog of approximately 1,300 undelivered orders for this series.

The rapid order intake for the BYD Racco, especially for its higher-end variants, signifies a promising start for BYD in the competitive Japanese electric vehicle market. The company’s ability to manage supply chain issues will be crucial as it aims to fulfill the substantial number of outstanding orders and further expand its market share.
