At the recent Huawei Mate 90 series and full-scenario new product launch event, Richard Yu, Huawei’s Executive Director and Chairman of the Terminal BG, unveiled key details about the camera system for the new Mate 90 series. This new lineup introduces the upgraded XMAGE imaging system, promising significant advancements in mobile photography.
XMAGE: A Leap in Mobile Imaging
The Mate 90 series is set to debut the entirely new XMAGE imaging system. This system represents a culmination of Huawei’s imaging technology, focusing on continuous innovation across five core areas: portraits, telephoto, color, video, and intelligent photography. Key hardware enhancements include a full-series continuous variable aperture, the third-generation Red Maple primary color camera, a super-large 200-megapixel telephoto sensor, and a main camera with an 18EV ultra-high dynamic range, all designed to elevate the mobile imaging experience.
Continuous Variable Aperture for Versatility
A standout feature across the entire Mate 90 series is the continuous variable aperture, offering stepless adjustment from F1.4 to F4.0. This allows for beautiful, natural bokeh in portrait shots at the wider F1.4 setting, while the F4.0 aperture ensures sharpness for both subjects and background in group photos. The continuous adjustment also eliminates flicker when transitioning between light and dark scenes, significantly improving the video shooting experience.
Enhanced Portrait and Color Accuracy
Portrait photography sees a major boost thanks to chip-level portrait segmentation algorithms and calibration. Huawei reports a 62% improvement in skin tone accuracy. Coupled with the third-generation Red Maple primary color camera, which boasts a 37% increase in color accuracy, the Mate 90 series aims to deliver true-to-life skin tones with a natural look straight out of the camera. The system is designed to render red maple colors realistically, providing users with authentic photographic results.
Conquering Challenging Scenes
For difficult shooting conditions, the Mate 90 Pro Max is equipped to handle challenging scenarios. It features a Red Maple night mode that effectively manages glare and a dedicated fireworks mode to capture brilliant moments. The 18EV ultra-high dynamic range video ensures that shots remain clear even in backlight situations. The super-large 200-megapixel telephoto sensor supports innovative multi-composition techniques, allowing for multiple focal points within a single image.
Advanced Telephoto and Video Capabilities
The telephoto capabilities of the Pro Max model are particularly impressive, maintaining clarity and dynamism in portraits at 4x, 10x, and 20x zoom levels. The telephoto macro function also expands creative possibilities for close-up photography. Huawei has placed a strong emphasis on video performance, integrating the tenth-generation ISP and CIPA 7.5 telephoto stabilization. This results in stable and clear 20x telephoto portraits, with a 34% improvement in telephoto video clarity and a 41% enhancement in telephoto stabilization, reportedly outperforming other 20x telephoto solutions in the industry.
Intelligent Shooting and Professional Expansion
The XMAGE intelligent shooting mode now includes an AI pose recommendation feature, making group photos more cohesive and appealing. For professional users, the ability to pair the device with accessories like the SmallRig 3.3x telephoto lens further extends its telephoto capabilities.
The Huawei Mate 90 series, powered by the new XMAGE imaging system, is poised to set new benchmarks in smartphone photography and videography, offering users unprecedented versatility and quality.
