CD Projekt Red’s acclaimed RPG, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, is set to receive a significant update with the Complete Edition today, alongside a brand new expansion, ‘Tales of the Past‘, launching next year. This new chapter arrives 12 years after the original game’s debut, prompting questions about why CDPR is revisiting Geralt’s story after such a long hiatus. The development team’s answer is simple: they believe there are still plenty of unfinished narratives to explore.
More Than Just an Epilogue
Karolina Stachera-Rokus, Creative Vision Director at Fool’s Theory, a studio supported by CDPR, shared with VGC that ‘Tales of the Past‘ presents a valuable opportunity to weave new tales around familiar characters and offer fresh perspectives on their journeys.
“This is a great opportunity to tell new stories around characters that players know and love, and to see them from a different angle,” Stachera-Rokus explained. “‘Tales of the Past‘ is, first and foremost, a full expansion that will offer a much richer story. At the same time, Geralt’s best friend will also be with us, and his life has also had some important moments, right?”
Dandelion Takes Center Stage
As players familiar with the Witcher universe know, the beloved bard Dandelion is a crucial figure in ‘Tales of the Past‘. The expansion will delve deeper into his past, taking players to his hometown of Rivia. Here, Geralt will uncover hidden secrets and confront formidable adversaries.
The decision to create an entire expansion around Dandelion stems from the team’s desire to explore the characters surrounding Geralt. Their initial concept was to further investigate the lives of those close to the White Wolf and see what compelling stories could be uncovered from their experiences.
Unfinished Tales
Stachera-Rokus emphasized that the team has always aimed to explore the stories of individuals significant to Geralt. The expansion isn’t about neatly tying up loose ends, but rather about recognizing that Geralt’s saga offers more narrative potential.
“We’ve always wanted to tell more about those who are important to Geralt,” she stated. “We’re not trying to deliberately put a period at the end of anything, we still feel that there are more stories to tell about Geralt himself.”
The upcoming ‘Tales of the Past‘ expansion promises to reignite the passion of Witcher fans, offering a chance to revisit the beloved world and uncover more about its complex characters.
