In a significant move to bolster the burgeoning field of artificial intelligence, a consortium of six Samsung affiliates has announced a collective investment of $1 billion in Helix, an AI infrastructure company founded by KKR. The announcement, made on September 29th, signals a strong commitment from the South Korean conglomerate to the foundational technologies powering AI.

A Strategic Investment in AI’s Backbone

Samsung Electronics is leading the charge with a substantial $500 million contribution, while the remaining $500 million is a combined effort from five other key Samsung entities: Samsung C&T, Samsung SDS, Samsung SDI, Samsung Life Insurance, and Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance. This significant capital infusion positions Helix as a major player in the development and operation of AI infrastructure.

Helix, under the leadership of former Amazon Web Services (AWS) CEO Adam Selipsky, boasts an impressive roster of founding investors that includes KKR, the Kuwait Investment Authority, NVIDIA, and the American power company Vistra. This diverse group of investors underscores the broad appeal and strategic importance of Helix’s mission.

Synergies Across the Samsung Ecosystem

The investment highlights the potential for synergistic collaboration between Helix and the various Samsung affiliates. Samsung Electronics’ Device Solutions (DS) division is well-positioned to supply advanced semiconductor solutions crucial for AI infrastructure. The DX division, through its HVAC company FläktGroup, can contribute to the environmental control systems needed in large-scale data centers.

Furthermore, Samsung C&T brings expertise in the construction of data centers and power generation projects. Samsung SDS offers a comprehensive suite of IT solutions, including data center design, construction, operation, and GPU-as-a-Service (GPUaaS), directly supporting AI computing needs. Complementing these capabilities, Samsung SDI can provide essential power backup solutions like Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS) and Battery Backup (BBU).

Helix’s Comprehensive Infrastructure Focus

Helix’s business scope is designed to address the full spectrum of AI infrastructure requirements. This includes the development and operation of hyperscale data centers, which are the physical hubs for massive data processing and AI model training. The company is also involved in power generation, focusing on both baseload and flexible energy sources to ensure reliable and sustainable power for these data-intensive operations. Additionally, Helix is building out the necessary transmission and distribution infrastructure, as well as fiber optic networks, to support the high-speed data transfer demands of AI.

This multi-faceted approach by Helix, backed by substantial investment from Samsung and other global leaders, aims to create a robust and scalable foundation for the continued advancement of artificial intelligence technologies worldwide.
