In a challenging market marked by significant increases in memory component costs, Xiaomi is doubling down on innovation as the key to meeting consumer demand for new and upgraded smartphones. Lu Weibing, a key executive at Xiaomi Group, emphasized this strategy, stating that only innovative products can truly satisfy users’ needs for purchasing or upgrading their devices during this volatile period.

Innovation as a Response to Cost Pressures

Lu Weibing, who holds multiple high-profile roles including Xiaomi Group Partner, President, and President of the Mobile Phone Department, recently shared his perspective on the smartphone market’s evolving landscape. He pointed out that while component costs, particularly for memory, are experiencing sharp fluctuations, the company’s focus remains on delivering enhanced value through product innovation rather than simply passing on increased expenses to consumers.

This philosophy is directly reflected in Xiaomi’s latest product lines. Lu Weibing highlighted the Xiaomi 18 Fold and the Xiaomi 18 Pro series as prime examples of this forward-thinking approach. These devices are designed not just to meet current market expectations but to set new benchmarks, even in the face of rising production costs.

Success of the Xiaomi 18 Fold

The company’s commitment to innovation appears to be paying off, particularly with its foldable offerings. Lu Weibing revealed that the first sale of the Xiaomi 18 Fold, a mid-folding smartphone, saw a remarkable 300% year-on-year increase in retail sales compared to its predecessor in the large-folding category. This impressive growth underscores consumer interest in cutting-edge form factors and advanced features.

The Xiaomi 18 Fold, which was launched on September 7th, boasts cutting-edge technology. It features the new Xuanjie O3 chip, a dual-screen setup with a 5.38-inch outer display and a 7.58-inch inner display, and a Leica professional triple-camera system on the rear. With a starting price of 10,999 yuan, it represents a significant investment in advanced mobile technology.

Navigating Market Dynamics

Speaking previously with the media after the IFA 2026 Xiaomi Global Launch event, Lu Weibing addressed the ongoing issue of rising storage costs. He acknowledged the fluctuating nature of these prices but stressed Xiaomi’s proactive approach. “Whether it rises or falls, we must move forward,” he stated. Crucially, Xiaomi’s internal analysis led to a clear conclusion: the company cannot simply transfer costs to the consumer. Instead, the focus must be on making the products themselves significantly better and more appealing.

This strategic emphasis on product superiority over cost-shifting is a cornerstone of Xiaomi’s market strategy. By integrating advanced features, unique designs, and superior performance, Xiaomi aims to justify its pricing and capture the imagination of consumers looking for the next big thing in mobile technology. The success of the Xiaomi 18 Fold suggests this strategy is resonating well with the market, even as the industry grapples with economic headwinds.
