China has achieved a significant milestone in its educational development, with its basic education system now reaching the average level of high-income countries. This announcement was made by a representative from the Ministry of Education at a press conference held by the State Council Information Office.
Key Achievements in Education
The Ministry highlighted that China has successfully established the world’s largest and highest-quality education system, positioning its educational outreach and fairness among the world’s leaders. Several key statistics underscore this progress:
- Preschool Education: The gross enrollment rate for preschool education has reached 92.9%.
- Compulsory Education: The consolidation rate for compulsory education stands at 96.1%.
- Senior Secondary Education: The gross enrollment rate for senior secondary education is 92%.
Furthermore, significant efforts have been made to improve the well-being and academic environment for students. Comprehensive physical activity sessions of 2 hours per day are now fully implemented for primary and secondary school students, alongside a 15-minute break period between classes. This initiative has contributed to a continuous decline in the overall myopia rate among students for five consecutive years.
Advancements in Higher Education and Vocational Training
The nation’s higher education system has demonstrably enhanced its capacity for independent technological innovation and talent cultivation. It has accelerated the development of a large number of top-tier innovative talents crucial for national strategies and industries. Notably, in the 2025 National Science and Technology Awards, higher education institutions led in three-quarters of the general project awards. Vocational education is also playing a pivotal role, supplying over 70% of newly cultivated high-skilled talents for modern industries.
As a result of these advancements, China now boasts a population of 270 million individuals who have received higher education. The country’s international influence in education continues to grow.
