Following the surprise announcement of Diablo 5 at BlizzCon, a significant question loomed for fans: what does this mean for the future of Diablo 4? Blizzard has confirmed that the classic Amazon character will return to Diablo 4 in early 2027, but further details about major expansions for the current title seem unlikely.
Focus Shifts to Diablo 5 Development
In an interview with PC Gamer, Diablo series Game Director Brent Gibson clarified the studio’s direction. “Our entire team is focused on season updates for Diablo 4 and the development of Diablo 5,” Gibson stated. “We feel like Vessel of Hatred told its story. Vessel of Hatred provided a satisfying conclusion to Mephisto’s narrative, and we will now move on to telling the story of The Lord of Hatred.”
While Vessel of Hatred provided a strong sense of narrative closure, some players viewed it as the end of a chapter rather than the definitive conclusion of the game’s overarching story. Blizzard plans to introduce more narrative content, but this will be delivered through future seasons rather than large-scale expansions.
Bridging the Narrative Gap
Diablo 5 is set to take place a century after the events of Diablo 4, introducing a Sanctuary that has significantly changed. A major expansion for Diablo 4 could have served as a narrative bridge, but the century-long time jump presents considerable challenges for such a direct connection. Instead, Blizzard aims to use seasonal content to help connect the storylines, though the specific methods for achieving this are still under development.
“We’re really excited about narrative continuity, but we haven’t mapped out a complete, clear path yet because we want to continue to observe player feedback on each season,” Gibson added. This suggests a flexible approach, allowing the developers to adapt the narrative based on player engagement and reception of seasonal content.
Upcoming Season and Switch Port
The next season for Diablo 4, “Season of the Construct,” is scheduled to launch on September 15th. This season commemorates the series’ 30th anniversary and will feature the return of Deckard Cain, who will aid players in their battles against the prime evils: Diablo, Baal, and Mephisto. Coinciding with the season’s launch, the long-rumored Nintendo Switch port of Diablo 4 will also become available, including all previously released content.
The confirmation that major expansions are off the table for Diablo 4 marks a significant strategic shift for Blizzard, indicating a clear prioritization of the development of Diablo 5. While fans may be disappointed by the lack of further large-scale content for Diablo 4, the focus on seasonal updates and the promise of a new mainline entry signal an exciting, albeit distant, future for the acclaimed action RPG franchise.
