Xiaomi has officially launched its innovative ‘Longjia’ battery, a product developed in collaboration with battery giants CATL and Sunwoda. Unveiled at a dedicated strategic cooperation conference, the Longjia battery is positioned as a significant advancement in electric vehicle safety and performance.

‘Longjia’ Battery Assurance Plan Highlights Lifetime Guarantees

To underscore its confidence in the new battery technology, Xiaomi introduced the ‘Xiaomi Longjia Battery Assurance Plan.’ This comprehensive plan offers unprecedented lifetime guarantees, setting a new benchmark for consumer protection in the EV market.

Key Features of the Assurance Plan:

  • Lifetime Guarantee Against Spontaneous Combustion: In the event of spontaneous battery fire caused by original manufacturing defects, leading to the vehicle being declared a total loss, Xiaomi pledges to compensate the owner with a new vehicle of the same configuration.
  • Lifetime Guarantee Against Collision Fires: For fires resulting from battery impacts or underbody scrapes due to collisions, the plan covers the difference between the vehicle’s insured value (comprehensive insurance policy) and the actual payout received from the insurance company, should the vehicle be declared a total loss.

‘Longjia’ Battery: Systemic Solution for EV Power

As previously reported, the ‘Xiaomi Longjia Battery’ represents Xiaomi’s proprietary systematic solution for EV power systems. The company has taken a leading role in product definition, battery pack design and development, and has also participated in the cell design and development. Crucially, Xiaomi oversees the entire quality control process, ensuring rigorous standards are met from start to finish.

Setting New Safety Standards Far Beyond National Requirements

The standout feature of the Longjia battery lies in its safety standards, which significantly exceed current national requirements in several critical areas:

Structural Safety

In a bottom impact scenario, the Longjia battery is designed to withstand impacts from a 25mm diameter head with 500J of energy. This is considerably more stringent than the national standard, which requires resistance to a 30mm head with 150J of energy. The smaller impactor and higher energy level create greater pressure. Importantly, after such an impact, the Longjia battery is required not only to prevent leakage, fire, or explosion but also to maintain its functional integrity, a requirement absent in the national standard.

Thermal Safety

The battery system is engineered to prevent thermal runaway propagation even under extreme conditions, such as operating at 55°C with a full charge. In the event of a single cell experiencing thermal runaway, the entire battery pack must remain free from fire or explosion. This surpasses the national standard, which typically tests under milder conditions of 22±5°C and battery charge levels of 95% or higher.

Electrical Safety

Electrical safety is enhanced through design redundancies that exceed national standards. A key innovation is the ‘millisecond-level mechanical knife switch.’ This system can physically cut off high voltage within milliseconds during emergencies like battery short circuits or vehicle collisions, thereby safeguarding the battery.

Big Data Security

The Longjia battery incorporates advanced data security measures, including 24-hour vehicle-cloud collaboration for safety alerts and constant AI-driven cloud inspections. The data acquisition frequency is ten times that of the national standard, and the data volume is three times greater, enabling a robust 7×24 hour safety monitoring capability.

Cell Cycle Life

Beyond safety, the Longjia battery also sets higher benchmarks for cell cycle life. Through careful selection of positive and negative electrode materials, electrolytes, and separators, along with optimized cell design and manufacturing processes, the battery’s cell cycle life significantly exceeds the national standard. This means the battery will maintain a higher capacity retention rate (above 80%) even after 1000 charge-discharge cycles.

The introduction of the Longjia battery and its comprehensive assurance plan signals Xiaomi’s strong commitment to EV safety and reliability, aiming to build consumer trust and push the boundaries of what’s expected in the electric vehicle industry.
