During NIO’s second-quarter earnings call, founder, chairman, and CEO William Li addressed the question of whether the company would venture into the robotics business. Li emphasized that while NIO has invested in many robotics companies, the industry is still in its nascent stages.

Prioritizing Automotive Excellence

Li stated, “The robotics industry chain is still in its very early stages. We have invested in many companies in this area. Actually, before our emergence, the automotive industry was already a very large market. We cannot expect NIO to be the first to do everything.” He stressed the company’s immediate focus: “Let’s sell cars well first, and turn the company into a profitable one. Of course, there will be many choices. It’s not new for car companies to get into robotics; most of them are doing it. We will do the car business well first.”

Financial Performance Snapshot

According to NIO’s report for the first half of fiscal year 2026 (January to June 2026), the company achieved significant year-over-year growth. Total revenues reached 57.67 billion yuan, an increase of 85.9%. Gross profit saw a substantial jump of 282.16% to 10.766 billion yuan. Furthermore, the net loss attributable to shareholders narrowed considerably by 89.88% to -1.218 billion yuan.

Broader Vision Beyond Cars

This strategic focus on core automotive operations comes as NIO continues to position itself as more than just an electric vehicle manufacturer. Previous statements from Li highlighted NIO’s identity as an “AI and energy company,” suggesting a broader technological ambition that encompasses advanced intelligence and energy solutions. The company’s strategy also involves pursuing “high-quality growth,” which Li indicated is not solely measured by sales volume. He pointed out that in July, NIO’s average transaction prices comprehensively surpassed those of traditional luxury brands like BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Audi (BBA), with the upcoming ‘ONVO’ brand (乐道) set to introduce strategically important new models.

While the pursuit of robotics remains a potential future avenue, NIO’s current priority is to solidify its position in the competitive automotive market, focusing on profitability and strengthening its core business before exploring diversification into new, emerging technological sectors like robotics.
