Pinterest will allow advertisers to make collages from catalogs

Pinterest is experimenting with “auto-collages,” an artificial intelligence feature that allows advertisers to quickly turn their product catalogs into shoppable collages, the company announced this week.

The new feature is designed to make it easier for advertisers to reach customers while saving time and creative resources, Pinterest said.

The company notes that collages are one of the most popular and interesting types of content among Generation Z users, with more than tens of millions of collages created on the platform. During the first tests, Pinterest found that users save auto-collages twice as often as standard product pins.

Autocollages combine product images into shoppable visual content based on factors such as outfit ideas, user engagement, similar products, and user-saved photos. For example, this feature can group clothes together to create a stylish outfit based on existing images. Or it can create a new collage similar to existing collages that are very popular with users.

Alternatively, the feature can select similar products and group them into a collage. Otherwise, Auto Collage can create a collage that includes products similar to those users have saved to their boards.

“Auto Collage comes from Pinterest’s Ads Labs program, which launched last year, where we’re introducing new AI-powered generative products to help brands stay ahead of the curve,” said Julie Townes, Pinterest’s vice president of product marketing and operations, in the announcement. “The auto-collage tool is an exciting leap forward that uses artificial intelligence to instantly transform how brands transform their product catalog into fresh creative that resonates with Generation Z and beyond.”

Pinterest has also announced that it is updating its Trends tool to help advertisers better understand and predict what users plan to buy next. The updated tool will use information about what users are saving, choosing, and buying.
